Why are people saying he's "a kid none of us had ever heard of"? He's a regular starter for a club in the division we're in, if "none of us" have heard of him then I really do worry .

Tbh I thought Patterson, Austin (and Iwelumo) were the first choice strikers for Burnley

Austin played a couple of games last season and missed most of it with injury, think he only played 3 or 4 but would probably be behind Jay Rod in the pecking order anyway, Paterson missed loads with injury too. Rodriguez often played with Iwelumo or with Wallace wide of Iwelumo, as far as I know.. Rodriguez is better than Paterson, Austin and Iwelumo anyway.

I don't know about anyone else but all these over priced British players just makes me think we would get better value abroad. At the moment I don't see the need for Southampton to be paying inflated prices it's not like we don't have and don't produce enough English talent as it is. I'm happy to bring a Foreign player in if it represents better value.

There's the risk factor though, that's why there's the English premium. Spend £5-6m on Jay Rodriguez or Maynard who we know can play in the league, or £3-4m on a foreigner who may just fall flat on his arse. Shevchenko is a fine example of why the premium is there. Though, tell that to Fernando Torres...

we have just received 12 million for aoc who was an England U21 & we are looking to replace him with another England U21 for 6 million which is a 6 million profit. Excellent business in my book! We cant expect to get other teams best players on the cheap especially after holding out for the price we wanted on aoc. If Adkins feels he is the right man we should pay the price What with the new rules coming in next season as well.

Don't understand that logic at all. Delap was 8 or 9 years ago now. Would you have been happier if just before going into administration we had spent £5m on a player?

Plenty of examples of clubs that overpay for players and wages and don't get success and just get into a mess.

Bolton & Stoke and the others are spending more because the TV payments in the Prem are way more now per season than years ago. So clubs like that, who have avoided relegation can bank more and then spend more (partly because they know they'll have parachute payments as a back up).

We don't fill our stadium. We fill our stadium 2 or 3 times a season on average. We would in the Prem, we are NOT in the Prem.

As I said earlier, I can guarantee the same people DEMANDING we spend lots of money will be the same people who will slag off Adkins & Cortese if those players arn't instantly amazing.

Football fans = mostly fickle idiots with no grip on reality.

I agree to an extent - BUT - do you think Burnely are gearing up for a promotion challenge? what about watford? no? why not? because they are relying on the squad they have or hope to pick up a bargain find.

west ham and leicester have both set the bench mark in this league, and although i dont agree with Leicester's spending policy, i think that after a long hard season, they will be fighting for top spot.

i know we have a 5 year plan - and that was fine - until we sold OXO. Now there is a bit of money to spend on 1 or 2 decent players - lets take advantage of that and do a norwich.

i been a saints fan for 30 years - and trust me, i'm not demanding. i just want to see progress. and if it means signing 1 player for £6 million, that shows progress!

Burnley can absoloutely keep for him for £6 million. We might have ripped Arsenal off for Chamberlain, but that doesn't mean we have to be ripped off by Burnley. If they really think he's worth £6 million, then fine - we can just move onto someone else.

To pay £6 million for someone, they would HAVE to be absoloutely immense for us and compeletely take us onto the next level. It is far from guarenteed that Rodriguez would do that. They'd not only become our record ever signing (and by some distance), they'd also completely over-shadow what we've paid for the other big names in our side. If we get the likes of Lambert, Fonte, Cork, Chaplow etc for well under £6 million each, then why do we need to completely go over the top for one extra player?

I'd prefer us not to spend more than £3 million on a striker, but I think anything up to about £4.5 million I would just about still be comfortable with. But I absoloutely do not want us going beyond that.

If I sold you a Ford Focus for a million, it would still be a Ford Focus.

Yeah but if you sold your Ford Focus for £12 million (rising to £15m depending on mileage) and then a week later someone offered you another Ford Focus for £6 million, would it not at least be worth trying to haggle it down to £5million and pocket the £12million profit? ;)

Not if you could still buy a brand new Focus for 16k :p

I can see both points of view in this debate. I feel £6million is a lot of money to spend on one player at this level but on the other hand, can we really escape prices like that if we're trying to build a squad good enough to take us up? I don't believe in spending huge amounts of money on lots of players, but a lot of money on one or two could work out well.

That's the issue. It's too much money, but what's the alternative? Spend less on somebody not good enough, or just don't buy anybody? You could argue we don't need anybody, but, we do. Anybody who thinks this current squad is good enough to go up without a massive amount of luck is kidding themselves.

6 million is was too much, for sure he is not that good! 3.5 - 4 million max, if burnley dont want ot play ball then lets look at someone else

Beckford maybe??? Apparently Leciester to big 3mil

I totally agree - add to that the fact that other clubs will view us a 'rich' and will automatically inflate their asking prices. We're going to loose out moneywise regardless. Just a thought, does anybody know what we paid for De Ridder?

You think Beckford fits in with what we are trying to do here? not known for his outstanding attitude and not knocking ateam like Everton but if your a striker struggling at Everton then you are a struggling striker... great team but kown for grinding results rather than free scoring!

Too much of a big time Charlie. Still got three years left on his contract with a top half Prem club who have a striker shortage. With wages factored in, makes potentially less financial sense than J-Rod.

Not for sure, quoted as being substantial... I have been told it was up and around the £1 million mark.

Thought it was about that, if true - it seems we can get quality from abroad for a lot less money than if we were to get the same quality in England. The downside; players from abroad wont have the experience of playing in England. It's all swings and roundabouts really!

You escape these ludicrous prices by going abroad for your signings. The market doesn't appear to be too inflated outside of England. As has already been pointed out on here, Utd managed to get Hernandez for just £6 million.

By all accounts, Guly didn't exactly cost us too much (£750,000 was it?). De Ridder likewise.

For sure, there's always a risk over brining someone in who has never played English football before, but if you have the right scouting nextwork then that should lower the risk. No-one knew who Pahars was when we signed him, and he wasn't half bad for a striker.
