Some fair points from both sides here I think ( excluding the mud slinging and bitterness)
The people that are now retired did have better paid more secure jobs than the younger generation.
The younger generation also now have to contribute to the pensions via there paye.
Whilst also agreeing with the point that for the past couple of decades+ you can knock out a few kids and never contribute to society.
My dad retired 8 years ago and said he's better off now than ever.

Your "dumbed down" comment just typifies the boneheaded arrogance of your generation, and as I've said before, based on the job you lot are doing, and the mess you're leaving, I'll take my "dumbed down" education over whatever the hell you had.

It's a known fact that your generation had it a lot easier than ours, easier to find a job, easier to buy a house, easier to get access to healthcare and easier retire at a reasonable age (with a state pension).

Try doing A level and degree exam papers from the sixties and seventies, in your best subject, then get back to me.

The percentage of people going on to tertiary education in those days was low. Everything was paid for yes, but there were not many places available. Very few from "Working Class" backgrounds, in particular from Council Estates up North made it on to degree courses. I was the first one on both sides of my family to do it.

Do some background reading before you attack others.

I do wish you'd practice what you preach on that last line.

In terms of "working class" kids going on to university, given the costs involved that's still an issue (especially in terms of "traditional" universities).

With regards to the "dumbing down" of education, it's just not something I agree with. I think in terms of the "difficulty" of the exam papers you reference, you're probably right that I'd struggle with papers from yonder, but does that invalidate my education? Nope, education has simply changed with the times, should I learn how to solve an equation that a computer program can do for me? Or should I learn how to write that computer program?

Different times, they're not comparable in my opinion.

A good job someone could program the computer in the first place. On paper my kids have far higher maths qualifications but .I could leave them standing in working something out.

I get your point, but at this point the computer is just another "tool" for you to use. You didn't learn to make a pencil before you learnt to write.

I stand by the point that your generation's arrogance, given the state of the country, is unwarranted.
 
Soz unable to get the atmosphere and entertainment ratings, but att. today was 76,682.
Us v Bristol was 86, 708.

Still massive.

I have spent 40 years+ contributing to the pensions of those entitled to a pension. As did everyone since 1948. Now the contributions go towards my pension. Which is the worst of any industrialised country. There is a flaw in the system and it will get worse. It is that when the pension was introduced the average life expectancy meant a male on average drew one for 18 months. Decade on decade this has increased and now the average male can expect to draw a pension for 14 years. Not only that, far more are drawing it. And, in addition a lot of people have arrived in this country who if they have paid 10 years in are entitled to a pension. This won't be high but pension credits will top it up to a level the same as those have paid in for decades more.
Something will have to give. There is no fund, contributions are taken and paid straight out. Don't ask me what the answer is though. I do feel for those in their twenties and thirties as the current system is not sustainable. Maybe they should look at other countries like .France and Germany where pensions are better and it doesn't cost a fortune paying top ups and the money it costs to monitor and pay out these sums.

Yes it's not ideal is it.
It's like the system where people that are careful whilst working and put a bit aside are punished if they come out of work.
