I imagine he respects Brian Clough. I imagine most scousers - perhaps secretly - respect Alex Fergusson. But it's hard to imagine Spurs fans showing that level of class, sadly.
OK, not sure what class has to do with this question. Perhaps you could share your favourite Portsmouth manager then? Was it Harry?
And why would secretly admiring a rival be relevant? We might secretly admire Wenger (and I have to say I've admired him more and more as time has gone by) but the nature of secrecy is that no one would know. And it is easier to admire them after they've retired. I'm sure most of us will acknowledge his achievements in the future, but for now he is one of the enemy.
Exactly. I may or may not be prepared to admit that Wenger will probably be the greatest manager Arsenal are ever likely to have, but I am hardly going to say that now.
I rate Brian Clough as the best British club manager of my lifetime ... guess who he managed ... and that should answer your question
Just posted without reading yours first ... as I said .. I rate Brian Clough as the best ever British club manager ... it was a crime against the state that he never got the England job. Whilst I wasn't best plaeased that it was Forest and Derby he was working his miracles on, even at the time, I was happy to concede his managerial genius ... just felt a bit left out
You can't argue with him. Like him or loathe him (I loathe him) but he's a modern day great manager. I personally rate Brian Clough as the second best manager Britain has ever produced, although he'll say that he's in the top one.
Again, easy to say when looking back. There are many who feel Clough was only as good as he was due to Peter Taylor (it was the partnership, rather than Clough alone). Leeds and the last few years at Forest were not good experiences. Shankly, Paisley, Busby must all be up there.
Managed the richest club in England (and arguably the most sigbificant football brand in the world) to incredible success for sure ... but could he have taken 2 second division teams to win the Top tier title and one of them to win 2 European cups on very limited funds compared to the competition around him? ... we'll never know... but I very much doubt it. No arguing that his Premiership managerial success record is most unlikely to be beaten by anyone mind
... and Jock Stein .... but it's hard to detract from Clough ... if it was down to the 'partnership' then you have to congratulate him on his inspired choice of an assistant to work with him ... ... and the ex-players all seem to suggest where the real genius lay ...
Ferguson achieved big things at Aberdeen and built a great side there. He won the cup winners cup (I think it was) v real Madrid
... no he didn't ... but he didn't bring them up from the Scottish second division to win the title or repeat it with Inver Sporran Haggis Noshing Academicals subsequently ... ... and there were only really 4 competitive Scottish teams at the time... the Dons, the old firm and Dundee United.
Not knocking clough for a second, he is a true football legend but it was easier to bring teams up through leagues back in the day. Look at what Taylor achieved at Watford.
... and his top division titles with Watford ... and European Cups? Clough acheived the title twice with 2 different teams of humble origin ... ... there really is no comparison -
So much disrespect on this thread, I'm embarrassed to be called a Not606'er. Hang your heads in shame!
He is the greatest manager Arsenal have ever had and we have had a few. That is a fact, not dependent on whether you admit it or not. Whether he will be the greatest manager we are ever likely to have, we can only hope that isnt the case.
