Just in and just seen this. What an absolute ****ing disgrace, I am livid.

I think we all need to kick up a stink with this through radio 5 live etc.

When I was just a whipper snapper I knew two old gents who were at both games of that semi-final + they both told me independently of each other, (they did not know each other) three things that have had me hate Arsenal since. 1. The referee was a cousin of a member of the Arsenal board. 2. Arthur Childs, City's centre half was sent off + no one knows why to this day. Arsenal say it was violent conduct while others said he illegal studs. He was the first man to be sent of in a FA cup semi-final. 3. The referee never refereed a first class game again because of the uproar about his performance.
As an aside one of the blokes was a butler for a guy who was also a keen City fan as well as a pilot. They would fly to matches all across the country watching City. He was genuine chap + I have no reason to doubt him.

My dad and grandad went to the the drawn match in Leeds and my grandad to the replay in Birmingham - dad could not get the time off work.
At Leeds we were a familiar 2-0 up. Grandad said "we was robbed" on the replay result.

that ties in with what i've read. arsenal won the cup after that and it was their first trophy.

I wonder if the club previously known as Dial Square, Woolwich Arsenal and The Arsenal, have such a long history of receiving preferential treatment, most notably in the season immediately following the 1st World War, when they were promoted to the 1st division despite finishing 6th in the last 2nd division season before the war, that it has set a precedent that has been followed ever since.

Other teams that were considered for promotion or in the case of Tottenham who finished 20th in the old 1st division (retention of status), were, with 1914-15 2nd div positions, Barnsley (3rd), Wolves (4th), Birmingham (5th), Arsenal (6th), Hull City (7th) and Nottingham Forest (18th). Arsenal were promoted at the expense of all the other teams.

Other examples given by many of you, suggest a continuing pattern to this.

I believe after Dial Square they became Royal Arsenal and won a trophy under that name in 1889/90 playing in the London Senior Cup.

Sunderland and West Brom equivocally qualify for Vitriol & Venomous Hate. 2 overrated places & clubs that occupy spaces that they have NO right to.

Sunderland are last aren't they? They're a pretty big club, think it's a bit harsh to say they don't deserve to be in the Top Flight.

There is a pretty good account of Arsenal's election into Div 1 here:

They can probably say their true claim to fame is as the only 1st Div / PL team that has never been promoted to the top flight.

I would love it if clubs like ourselves turned out back on the FA and ****ed off out of their untouchable corrupt little circle.

If enough jumped it wouldn't be long before the big twats like Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal wanted in as they're bored of their repetitive 5 team league. And those ****s already ruined it for everyone else once so they'd obviously just get told to **** off.

Would never happen mind.

Good quiz question that.

I haven't validated the assertion. There may be others, such as founder members like Accrington, probably need to exclude them.

Two other questions on this theme:

1. which teams have won the Div 2 / League 1 / Championship (i.e. 2nd tier) playoff final but didn't get promoted?

2. which teams were in the 2nd tier playoff final, but were then relegated?

If the judge finds City guilty and asks City's barrister if he'd like anything to be taken in consideration m'learned friend should say, "We plead Clattenburg your honour."

1. swindon?

I don't think Walcott did enough to get sent off.

But he did more than our lads who are now up on an FA charge.

It's a farce.

A couple of points.

Gibb' s "tackle" was overshadowed by whether he was the last man. He had no chance of getting the ball being on the wrong side and made basically an assault rather than a tackle. Surely an arguable red for that alone.

However a shrewd bloke like Silva will get some traction out of the feeling that we were robbed. What better motivation during Portugal to get everyone pulling together. If it works and given we lost it is something to build on . Wagons in a circle?

All this assuming they won't dock us points? Any fear of that?

1. swindon?

yep, that's one of them. they won the final but Sunderland were promoted instead due to Swindon's financial irregularities and Swindon were relegated to Div 3 (so also one of the answers to (2)).

there's another one -- for a different reason.
