Assuming it does indeed come off, then there's a bit of a difference between us signing Caceres on a free and Sunderland signing Lescott on a free. (Something particularly worth highlighting, given that Sunderland have been linked to Caceres. Moyes and his love of ex-players...)

Path A.
Does well, steps in and cements his place. Does well over a dozen or so games showcasing his talents & gets a free transfer to Spurs in the summer.
Path B.
Called into action after another leaky performance. Mistake riddled & unreliable. Sits out the majority of games and disappears to nowhere in the summer.
Path C.
Grabs the chance he is given with consistent performances, tweets his love for the City, signs 3 year deal despite interest from WHU, goes on to become a coach.

Come on then, which one?

I'll go with Path D. Gets a half dozen games, is okay; we pick up the option for next season to reduce our purchasing needs for the summer.

Path D: Scores the decisive penalty at Wembley and celebrates by Cantona-ing Mourinho under the chin. Making him a Southampton legend never to be seen again...

Path E, does really well, given long term contract. Gets injured and never plays for team again and leaves us short of defensive cover whilst we struggle to balance EPL and Europa campaign
