He's a free agent who if fit comes in as our 2nd choice CB probably so he's worth the risk as long as his wages aren't astronomical.

Firstly I hope he passes the medical, and secondly his wage demands isn't too high that has Les running for the hills.

I'd be happy to have Caceres, but getting a CB who will need some time to be match fit and is coming off what is often a career-altering injury is not exactly the coup of the century. I mean, he hadn't played in more than half of his team's matches since 2010/11, and that was before snapping his Achilles.

Juventus have always been pretty well stocked at CB though. Agreed that he will need fitness, but I think he and Yoshida could be a good partnership down the line until Van Dijk is back.

Putting my trust in the medical. If this guy is ready but rusty, that's fine by me. Anything else, well that's Gardos department.

I see him coming in as an experienced player as a precaution for Maya getting injured or suspended, i'm more than comfortable with a Maya/ Stephens or Gardos partnership but not Stephens/ Gardos.

I hope they can get the work permit sorted fairly quickly. They might have to appeal as I don't think he qualifies automatically.

I hope you completed the questionnaire in the times last Sunday. I did and it appears that I among the top 5% or the elite of the country and am out of touch with the world. The first bit was news to me. The second bit I have known for years.

Whilst I agree with the premise of your post, I must question whether you are genuinely "more than confident about Yoshida and Stephens or )even more worrying imo) Yoshida and Gardos starting for us regularly in the premier league?

Whilst Yoshida gives me confidence the other two could be playing alongside VVD and I would still have major doubts.

"comfortable" is slightly different to "confident", but yes, from what I have seen from Stephens and Gardos, they won't let us down, but I worry that a Stephen's / Gardos partnership would lack a leader.

You are probably judging them both on the Arsenal match at SMS?...if so, that is slightly unfair as they didn't have much midfield protection that day and the whole team were out of their depth.

Ah my mistake. I actually read your post as "confident".

I still wouldn't say I am comfortable with either Stephens or Gardos being our first choice centre backs no matter who they play alongside. Hopefully they both prove me wrong!

Rather pay a guy £4k then £250k like Rooney. We have to accept that football is on another planet.

ROME - After the failure to reach agreement with Milan, the former Juventus defender Martin Caceres, could start from the Premier League. The player and his agent are negotiating with Southampton, the club still looking for a defender. The British have offered Uruguay's a 6 month contract at just under 1 million, with option for the following season. The deal could take off after carrying out medical examinations, for the umpteenth Caceres, after those carried out in Turkey with Trabzonspor and in Italy, in fact, with AC Milan. No feedback on Crystal Palace, who had proposed a contract to the player in late January, before the arrival of Mamadou Sakho, on loan from Liverpool.

I'm not. He will start alongside maya.

It's not that I don't rate Stephens but this has come too soon for him. 23 is young for a cb and it's the position on the pitch where experience counts most.

Uraguayan journo tweeting that all contract details have been agreed with medical being done now.

@gonzaloronchi1 Martín Cáceres en minutos comenzará la revisión médica con @SouthamptonFC. Ayer se llegó a un principio de acurdo en lo económico.
