Ah ok, not at St.Marys yet then? Did he get any kind of reception from the travelling Saints fans do you know? Edit: Just seen FLTs comment. Assuming he didn't get booed as I don't remember it. Or maybe I'm just getting old
No booing from me, probably give him a clap depending on the circumstances. The guy did a hell of a lot for the club (on and off the pitch) and had multiple chances to leave and didn't, most notably when the club had really been hit and there was so much uncertainty (just as Koeman came in) he helped to steady the ship and he stayed. Still disappointed in how it ended but I shan't be booing.
I`ve been with Saints since 1975. Jose since 2010. Can`t see why he should be cheered for finding another employer, of his own volition. Taking the piss springs to mind.
Voted boo. Sorry can't forgive him for the pre season "no-show" & what followed (immediate). IMO, that was a finger up to the club & fans. Will always thank him for his sterling service to that moment. Not sure what went on behind the scenes but I believe he laid his sole out then.
IN fairness, the pre-season no show was because he was on holiday following his euro exploits. Ditto Cedric ... I voted boo because I don't know what I'll do and it looked a little unloved.
Nope! He had plenty of opportunities to say / communicate to us (instagram/ bookface, etc). Zippo. I for one defended his corner bouncing in all manner of reasons s why. I should have keeped my trap shut. Stool was set.
I won't boo him. Or clap him. The unsavoury ending doesn't diminish the contribution for me, but Fonte now plays for another club so that's that. I think the only ex player I've ever acknowledged with a clap was Rickie, the big loveable lunk.
I never boo as I really can't see the point. They are hardly going to play badly through a sense of guilt or ask for absolution. I think it might even make them try harder. Also for us to have signed them they must have played for another club, so if they stayed loyal we never would have signed them in the first place. We must all have left jobs for a number of different reasons. I know some have left on better terms and handled it better, than others, but honestly, why boo!
He was being marked by Vic, so no telling who any boos may have been for (if there were any), it's footy fans after all
Clap and cheer him; christ life is too short and there are more important things in life than football; l have so appreciated what he has done for us over the seasons and the goal against Brighton l will take to the grave for personal reasons that day!
As someone who has not been impressed with JF's since the summer, I have to say, he has left us in the right way (as unpleasant as it seems right now). We knew he wasn't happy, he has acted like a brat outside of training & match days, a professional doing the minimum is still a professional (but not a captain by anyone's standards). Handing in a transfer request takes more bollocks than the likes of Lallana & Lovren. Fonte's only crime is letting his agent & ego take over, & he will look back with regret one day, mark my words. I don't believe my fellow saints will boo him, some will want to, but they won't. He dropped down to L1, he bought into our vision, he fought our battles, he achieved our goals. He just missed out on legend status. And that is rather sad.
No booing for me. He was a fantastic and loyal servant to the club. Wanted one more payday and didn't like what the club offered. Left us but at a time we needed him most (vvd injured for Liverpool game?!), so neutral for me.
Oh and I'm pretty sure fonte won motm at least once. His performances may not have been quite as dominating but the defence as a whole became error prone towards the winter.
Been following the fonte saga quite closely and i have found the spoilt fan entitlement a bit too much. People making assumptions about the club being correct and Fonte being wrong because he's leaving. No one knows what has really happened but people jumping on Fonte being too big for his boots. Let's just believe this was true, you've hardly fought to keep him here by dropping him for all your europey matches and constantly rotating him out of the side. If he wasn't pissed off, he definitely wasn't going to be won over by doing that. Obviously theres been a massive fallout between him and the club as he's willing to leave his legacy rather than cement it by going to arguably a smaller club in West Ham. I don't believe its for the money as he's hardly earning significantly more at west ham (if we are to believe the club offered him a new contract) He stayed with you over all those years, probably could have moved on many times over when everyone was jumping ship and he has been part of one of the most stubborn defences in the time he was here, first with Toby, then with Lovren and now with Virgil as well as scoring vital goals. Good luck Fonte
I agree with the bit in bold, yet I feel your post has the tone of pointing at the club. It goes both ways. Back to your second sentence in bold - "no one knows what has really happened" ... there has been as many blaming the club as have blamed Fonte.
