We'll if you think that leaving a clear issue with your club captain and, let's be honest, talisman, unresolved is the way that top leaders would go about things, I don't really know what to say other than I couldn't disagree more. That's simply sweeping issues under the carpet and just waiting for them to come back and bite you. Ultimately it isn't that hard to resolve issues like this. You simply have to draw a line in the sand. Issue that ultimatum and stick to your guns. In this case, sign the new contract or we'll accept that offer from x club. And that's regardless of who his agent is or what recent international success he had.

The British armed forces are not "officially" still in Helmand province. So he'd be a bit lonely out there, unless he has special forces training. I think being quite well known will make it difficult for him to blend in though.

I suspected that, hence the summer rumblings.

I understand why he'd want it to remain private - no-one wants to be the bad guy and he has always had a special relationship with the fans.

I also understand the club wanting it out there. Why should they take the flack when an offer comes in that we accept?

There is no right or wrong here. Both parties are trying to deal with it as best as possible. Some fans will use this an excuse to kick the board and some to kick a player leaving.

We move on.... or march on ... to Southampton Way.... or whatever.

I did actually answer that earlier. Fonte's leaving could simply have been used to stop another transfer going through assuming that was a factor. Regardless, let's flip it. Is the situation resolved now? No. Should it have been? Yes. Surely a sensible chap like you can see that viewpoint just as easily as your own. Fonte, purely because he IS Fonte, is a special case and one we have not handled well at all.

Spot on. Also explains not being selected in the Europa league. Some people are giving the "im not surprised he wants to leave, hes been dumped from the europa league". Actually the club wanted to give the honour to Yoshida who actually wants to be there.

What it also suggests is that there is no a deal in place already with United. Sounds like the club putting out a "for sale" advert.

It's his last chance for a big pay-day and % of the transfer fee, and at 33 he hasn't got much longer, so take the money and run, Virgil is the one you need to keep.

Bloody hell Jose, what is your problem? Not happy with earning in a week what a Doctor earns in a year, and the average football supporter would take 3 or 4 years to earn? All respect lost.

Try doing a 12 hour shift as a nurse or a doctor in a NHS hospital after years of training for less than half in a year what he gets in his poor paid SFC job in one week

I'm no leftie (rather the opposite actually), but I do think these footballers need to get a grip with reality. If he is on the reputed £80k a week, I'm sure many people would be able to last the year on one week of his wages. I just don't get the 'Last big payday' thing. He is not exactly on a pittance now.

Try doing a 12 hour shift as a nurse or a doctor in a NHS hospital after years of training for less than half in a year what he gets in his poor paid SFC job in one week

I'm no leftie (rather the opposite actually), but I do think these footballers need to get a grip with reality. If he is on the reputed £80k a week, I'm sure many people would be able to last the year on one week of his wages. I just don't get the 'Last big payday' thing. He is not exactly on a pittance now.

I have no idea how much you earn and am not going to ask. But say you earn £27k a year, around the UK average, doing a job that you absolutely loved (just stay with me). If you got offered a job that you didn't really like but for £45k a year, then you would have every right to take that job for the extra money.

People in Bangladesh that earn 50p an hour might look at you and think "How crazy?? He already had a job that he loved and earned what it takes me 5 years to earn! Why on earth would he leave that job he enjoyed just for a bit more money??"

That is essentially how we view Jose. He is living in a different world to us and so what seems like life changing money to us will just be viewed by him as a nice pay increase, something which most of us strive for.

Edit: I did this myself about 10 years ago, left a job I loved for one that I wasn't sure about, for a £15k pay rise. I hated it. went back to my old company after 2 years on a lower salary. Worst 2 years of my life. Maybe that is why I'm sounding off about it today - the grass isn't always greener

It is all relative I know, and to 99% of the population, if you are offered a substantial % pay rise, we would be mad not to take it.

This is a different world though. 99% of us even with a pay rise wil have to work until retirement age then get grumpy like St Godders. Fonte with the money earned in his career will never have to do another days work again if he is clever with it. That is my point on the money.

Maybe, maybe not. He's only had 3 or 4 years of earning really silly money and even then he's probably averaged £50k per week over that period. If he gets offered £100k a week he may be able to double his career earning in 3 years.

Yeah I know. I mean, yes, he could probably live on what he's already earned forever but he has a limited time to earn big money and he and his wife will have a certain lifestyle they want to maintain etc etc
