If successful it could turn Turkey away from becoming an Islamic run state and make it more secular, enabling it to reform so they can join the EU. The President is a bit of a megalomaniac so it comes as no surprise.

When did Turkey become a NATO member what's the policy on military coups in country...is it see what happens or are we expected to support the "legitimate" govt.

i always thought it was interesting that the most likely country 2 NATO members would fight were each other - and in fact did in some small engagements i think.
Not sure Greece fancies it so much these days though

Though Greek and Turkish regiments did fight alongside each other in Korea.
