Incredible turn of events as Spain have sacked their head coach with little more than 24 hours before the World Cup Starts

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44467548

Very bold decision based on the fact Real Madrid and Lopetegui held talks without informing the Spanish FA so have taken the moral stance of sacking him. Seems incredibly harsh (and ridiculous) but if they weren't aware of negotiations then that would equate to an illegal approach and one of the most blatant cases of 'tapping up' you may ever see
Incredible news!

Our name is on the Cup this year!! It's all falling into place!

I'm looking forward to this World Cup. The expectation is low. It was rock bottom, but I think it has been on the rise the past few weeks. Still low, compared to every other tournament. I'm expecting nothing, but like what Southgate is doing. I like the squad. It's mostly positive. Southgate has come across really well I think. I am just looking forward to watching the games. I think we can get out of the group. If we do, that's a good outcome. Anything beyond that will be something to shout about. I think every tournament in my life time, I've got excited and thought we had a chance. Then looking back you can see all the key moments we got screwed over. Felt like with right ref decisions or luck and we would have had a real chance. I have no expectations for the first time. I hope these young, exciting players will give us entertaining games. If we get out of the group, that's great. If they don't get out of the group, it wont be a shock, and I will just enjoy the football.

Apparently the concept of defending hasn't made much of an impact in Saudi Arabia.

They looked exactly how I assumed they would look. Pretty poor, bad defensively, no cutting edge, but with slight, quick players. They look like they should be set up to counter. They haven't really done that. Some of their wide players look like they have something. They have been really poor in this game though.

I wanted Russia to lose because they shouldn't even have the world cup. It's just another money thing. BUT. Russia winning comfortably is good for the occasion. This will give the fans and country and big buzz, and that should really help the world cup.

Well, a lot of talk before the game about how bad the Russia team was (no wins in 7) but that was a good performance tonight, albeit against a piss poor Saudi team.
Nice to see the goals flowing in the opening match

Wonder if teams will be too afraid to beat Russia with the fear of being poisoned? *puts tin hat back on*
