KIO had a sozzled friend telling him RvW would never play for us again, but I've not heard anything substantial. I've heard similar things about Carroll never being fit again too. At the moment I'm just going to put it down to speculation, but if we don't see RvW at least on the bench before the new year I'll start to get worried.

According to his twitter he was in contention to play on Friday but had some further fitness tests, I swear he was sat next to Elliot Bennett behind the bench.

He only actually joined the fist team training on Friday and supposedly Hughton didn't seem confident that we would see him today.
If he trains all week would be good to see him replace Elmander next week.

Must admit I did think he would be at least on the bench today. Will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of games. Like I say probably nothing in it but no smoke and all that......

Yeah, I was surprised to see Martin and Garrido rather than having a second striker on the bench, but I guess there's no point having someone on the bench if you only think he's fit for 10-15 minutes. Hughton gets questioned enough as it is, if Hooper went off injured after half an hour and left the Wolf sat on the bench, the crowd aren't going to take that particularly well.

Looking through twitter, both RvW and Fer seem to think he's not far away from being back, and RvW seems generally positive. I think you could ask RvW to manage his twitter account to not give the full extent of his injury away, but then I don't see why the club would ask Fer to tweet something clearly false for little benefit.

Why would we do that? Doesn't make any sense, doubt its true.

Agree with this too, he's on a 4 year contract I think, I don't see why we'd give up on him completely after only two months of injury.

Pretty rare in the prem for a team to buy any player out of their contract. Let alone a 8.5 million signing on a 4 year contract, no discipline issues, large wage, only injured for 2 months the list could go on. Load of rubbish.

My team for Sunderland.

Ruddy
Whittaker, Bassong, Turner, Ollson
Snodgrass, Fer, Howson, Redmond
Hooper, RvW

I'd go 4-4-2, as Sunderland have conceded more goals than us!!!!

Would be great to see, do we know if shoddy has a chance of making it?

In the world of football and ridiculous fan speculation, I think we can make an exception to the no smoke without fire saying.

I agree it's probably as you say " ridiculous" but we will see what happens in the coming weeks.

Surgeryman - can I read anything into your name?

My understanding was that the type of toe injury RvW has is very much career threatening. Low probability and with modern surgery you'd hope not, but it was always a danger.

I think the chances of us wanting to buy him out of his contract are slim - that would mean shelling out x million right now, when it would be better to spend x months trying to solve the problem.

I think it' sun likely, but by no means "ridiculous" that he might never play again due to injury. I suspect this rumour has come about because someone close to the club got wind of the fact that it was a "possibility" and these were options (it is mind boggling that a toe injury could be career threatening!) and then everything has gone all Chinese whispers.

Who has said its career threatening? What exactly is the injury, do you know? Almost certainly it is a load of rubbish someone made up because they were bored, turned into a rumour and for some reason people love stories like this because they think it could be big news. Sure we will see him playing soon.

30 years of working in operating theatres both here and overseas.

Can I just say I am also of the opinion that this is nothing more than a rumour, which I am just relaying on here for discussion. Not saying at all there us any truth in it.
