Why SAFC?

Don't know if this has been asked before, but I'm feeling pretty mellow and would like to know.

Why Sunderland?

For me my dad was one of that went to St James' one week, Roker the next. He never tried to influence my decision on who I followed. I thought he might have swayed more towards Newcastle, except for his reaction to the '73 final (and the '74!)

Two brothers both SAFC daft. One had trials, but wasn't chosed because of a certain Colin Todd. Coventry wanted him but he said "if it isn't Sunderland I don't want to know"

He went on to a glorious career with JL Thompson and Northumbrian Water.

My other bro simply loved - loves SAFC.

Anyway. I'm a Sunderland fan because of my family, plus the fact I could walk to the ground from Whitburn.

Just wondering. Anyone out there know why they support our club?

First game v Crystal Palace 1976 (I think) FA Cup Q/F At Roker Park.
I remember walking up the stairs in the Fulwell to be greeted by the greenest green grass I had ever seen. I was in ore of the mass of human bodies writhing as one with every little incident on the pitch.
I remember wondering why Malcolm Allison was giving a "backward" victory sign to the masses in the Fulwell, and why was my dear old Dad (RIP Mate) getting so worked up about it!
Unforgettable night in all, despite the result I was hooked.
 
Dad not into football so I had no intrest. around age 14 was invited to game with a mate and his dad and just tagged along but was bitten by the bug. Nothing to do with the football, found it boring but the atmosphere, the lights, the noise, the crowds.

That was it and the deeper I got in the harder it is to get out, stopped trying to get out years ago.
 
Canary in peace etc, So what do you reckon the score will be next Mon at Carrow rd?.... You are guaranteed a pen so we will have to get at least 2 goals.......I m sure we will give Bruce a good reception as he was a legend for us..............<cheers>
 
Family for me too. My dad is a rugby man, he played at Northern, he follows the mags a little but has always encouraged me to play Rugby which I did for years even though I was a much better footballer. My Grandad got me watching Everton a bit but he was also a rugby man (although rugby league) and followed St Helens more.

While I enjoy Rugby and I played league and union through uni I enjoy playing a watching football much more so I followed my mums side of the family who are from Sunderland. They used to live a stones throw from where the SOL is now built. Started going to the games with a mate who was also a Sunderland fan and have been going ever since. Had a season ticket for quite a while and did the 400 mile round trip every other week, but I just don't have the time to do that anymore so just get to as many games as possible.

My brother has done his usual and chose the opposite to me, so he is in the Mag camp although he only goes about 4 times a year and is not as big a football fan as I am.

Hard to say mate will take a point as it's away so going for a 2-2 thriller with both teams giving pens away and as said by my erstwhile colleague Cyprus what makes you think we'll score a penalty?

p.s. not really sure what erstwhile means.
 
It was my dad that got me to Roker Park, started in 1959 in the Fulwell end, but graduated to the Fulwell Paddock with my dad and five brothers, we were all Sunderland daft, Ive lost my dad and three of my brothers but have loads of memories, some happy but mostly dissapointment in my team being nearly good enough but never quite made it, still i do think this squad CAN deliver, heres hoping.
 
Bred in. Red & white wooley bobble hat in me pram, or so I'm told. First game in 1948, aged four, with my dad, versus (would you believe) Newcastle. Couldn't do that today. Don't remember a thing about it, even the score, but distinctly remember great sections of the crowd on the opposite side of the ground swaying first one way and then the other. That made me laugh.
 
Was born in London and sort of supported Arsenal for the first couple of years just because some family friends did. My dad was never into football so had no allegiance from him. When I was 3 we moved to Norwich, my mum met my stepdad who was born and bred in Sunderland and I gradually took more and more of an interest. This peaked in May 1998 when we had my stepdads family round to watch the playoff final as we were the only ones with sky. What a game. I've never looked back since!

Unfortunately being brought up in Norwich does have it's disadvantages, namely that I've nly ever been abl to see the lads play at Carrow Road. Now I'm earning, though, I intend to start trying to make the long trip up to the SOL a couple of times a season. Would be there every other week if it was practical :emoticon-0106-cryin

Your Mam was a lucky lady...<laugh>
I used to live in Watton (very strange town) so I used to know Norwich very well.
Very nice city, which reminded me of Sunderland for reasons I can't really explain fully but I think it was the people.
