Why Hull City AFC?

I assume most of you guys on here are born & bred in Hull, so the answer might be obvious, but also aware that there are plenty of locals supporting some of the "big boy teams".
What made YOU follow City?

Personally, being from Sweden, it started with Football Manager. I grew up watching the Premier League week in and week out, but never had a favourite team outside of Sweden, just loved watching it.
I'd watch it with my dad, don't even think he was that interested, but gave him a decent excuse for a pint and peanuts. I can't really smell peanuts without getting flashbacks to those days, side trivia.

I kept following the English leagues and when I was around 15-16 I could basically name every player in respective line ups for teams in the Championship & Premier League, some rain man stuff right there.
Some kids started drinking around them, I got hooked on Football Manager. I started playing with Hull, somewhat fascinated by their history and with the long serving players such as Myhill,Dawson, Ashbee, legends.

Made me more interested in following their journey in real life. I'm afraid Henrik Pedersen was better for me in the game than in real life, but that's the way City got me hooked.

I moved to Stoke-On-Trent back in 2011 and not606's own legend SirCheshireBen drove me to my very first City game. Hull City AFC - Crystal Palace 0-1, absolutely awful game, can't even remember us creating one single chance. I was hooked to follow the club onwards through whatever rollercoaster awaited nevertheless. In that sense....City never disappoints.

Having previously lived in Hessle my dad decided when i was 5 that he needed some company at Boothferry park on a Saturday afternoon (more likely my mum told him to get me out from under her feet).

As i grew up my mates went and we run the gauntlet of walking through the enemies territory of the Boothferry Estate to get to BP and see the might Tigers before running the gauntlet of trying to get home without being filled in.

As i grew up i moved from the Hessle area over the water but the city blood ran strong through my veins that had been installed into me by dad as a youngster.

Despite having lived away from the area for 33 years now i still see City as my local club and the footballing love of my life.

Having now gone past the half century of supporting them I'm still as passionate about them although I'm afraid until the ****wits leave i will not purchase another ticket or merchandise relating to the club I love which sees them benefit. The day they leave will be the day i return to the KCom, although i may wait until a game is on !

Used to get in for nowt at 3/4 time with all the other kids.

Then a bit later it was 3 bob or 15p to get in, still affordable out my pocket money.

Been a paying customer ever since. Hooked for life.

For me it started with going with my dad at boothferry park, followed by playing for the club from the ages of 12 to 17, then onto working for the coaching side for a while... Just always been my club and one way or another it's been part of my life for pretty much all of it

We used to get free tickets at school. Played football in the morning for school then jumped on the express into Town at 1. Bus back & grabbed a Green Mail when I got off. Perfect Saturday.

Soon doing night games, then aways. Hooked.

When my family moved back to east Yorkshire from living abroad, in the late sixtys, I had never heard of hull city. In fact I took off to watching Leeds. Then I went to see northern Ireland versus Spain at boothferry park, I decided to come back and watch the local team who played there. I remember been confused about hull f.c and hull city. I'd never heard of rugby league. When I got off the train at boothferry halt, to a very loud nah nah nah nah. Ees from ull and ees from ull.i loved it.the city fans were much funnier than our over aggressive cousins from down the road and I couldn't help. Falling in love with you.well city actually.

Same as most of us I expect. Dad took to me to BP. The annoying thing is, I only know I saw Waggy & Chillo because my Dad told me I did. I can't remember anything from that era.

My memory kicks in for the Whitehurst, Askew, Payton days. My Mam could never understand why the first thing Dad did when we got home, was send me for a Green Sports Mail.

Elder brothers took me a few times in the Terry Neill era. Probably got in their way after that but it was enough for me to get hooked. So will always be grateful to them for that. All other mates supported the bigger clubs. I've had a pass on and off from around 74/5 and then continuous since we moved into the KCom. Actually we boycotted one season, ga e up the boycot a couple of matches in and ended up seeing every game anyway. Usually managed just a few away games per season since early 80's

Ha we all did that. The green mail was massive too and I always dropped loads of it in the bath. The late eighties team was my favourite as a city fan, away games were great days out.

Will resume in 2525 (probably, the way it's going).

I remember the first time I went to BP, emerged from Bunkers' concourse - couldn't believe my eyes - felt like Wembley sprawled out before me.

Smell of cig smoke in the air - still often makes me think of City.

Well me and my old man got given free tickets from some football camp I went too when I was five, it was last game of the 96/97 season and straight away after we got season tickets and had them until the Allan's started going.

It's so sad, because they got over 15 years season tickets out of me and my dad, ten years of Premier Club passes, all the drinks, food, shirts, programmes etc from one set of free tickets. They made a fortune from them. Now you have to pay full price as a kid to get in, I bet a duplicate me now would grow up and support a big team.

Give hundreds of free kids tickets away, get them hooked and charge a reasonable price. Sensible long term business strategy.

Don't know why but was jealous as hell , maybe I felt left out or didn't want to help me mam doing the shopping or other chores in a Saturday. Kept nagging to go and 1970 saw my debut at BP , think it was 3 shillings in old money ( 15 p ) and watched from the front of the north stand near the little 3 wheel vehicle enclosure . I was hooked , City are my team and always will be , don't for go for this having a second team crap . Got my first pass , aged 10 in 1974 , think it cost £ 3.20 for the whole season to watch from the south stand / pay the small extra payment to enter the well. Our dad was Hull born and bred but by 1980 had drifted away never to return . Big bro and me though , despite being German born to German mother have City in our blood , have seen the rollercoaster that is Hull City and never stopped going . Dad said he would never see City in the top flight and he was correct as he passed in 2006 .

One thing that struck a chord there was the mention your dad stating he would never see City in the top flight. My dad was exactly the same .. got near in 70/71 but not quite there. My own dad passed in 2005 and he too was correct .. i recall that fateful day in 2008 on the Full time whistle at Wembley breaking down in floods of tears not only at the joy of seeing us achieve the impossible but also recalling my dads words .. oh how he would have loved to have witnessed that day.

Ffs flooding up now just thinking about it again. I imagine many of us that were introduced to this club had our dads to thank .. and more then likely the older ones amongst us also have similar stories of how their dads passed away before we finally got that monkey off our back as being the biggest club never to have got to the top flight.

Went with me dad. Never missed a game for years until the Allams. Now I become more apathetic by the day.

Like a lot of other kids in the early '90s I got into football watching Man Utd, specifically Giggs, Scholes et al. One summer my mum made me go to one of Hull City's football in the community programme ran by John Davies. At the end of the summer we were all given a voucher for 1 free ticket. We had to use it before the end of the calendar year so my Dad decided (lapsed City fan of about 20 years) we would go on Boxing Day. We beat Hartlepool 1-0. Deano scored in 88th minute in a drab game from what I can remember (I was 8). We went once more the following season and then my Dad bought us season tickets for 1995-96. We were practically relegated by Christmas. My most enduring memory of that season is when they stopped putting the scores on board at the Kwik Save end and replaced it with the phone number for The Samaritans.
*edit - at the end of that 1995/96 season, i mentioned in earshot of my Dad that i supported Hull City and he shook his head a said "What have i done?!"
