Why did a rivalry never develop between Liverpool and City?

The Enemy of my enemy thing is bollox, as we hate Leeds too!

My opinion is that this is a modern rivalry, and for my it was started in the 70's, when Liverpool were winning all before them, yet the Manchester papers still wouldn't shut up about United. and you know how we will always stand up against injustice. So as power has switched back and forth between the two teams, both sets of fans have had to deal with the "latency of the media", and how one team cannot enjoy supremacy without having previous success by their rivals thrown in their faces.

I can see citeh fans being pissed this year, that even though they have the better team, and they are the current champions, everyone in the media see it as a blip and how united will win the title this year. Chelsea's time at the top was so brief that neither united or Liverpool were ever put out enough to care about them. Same with Everton, a couple of good years in the 80's is not enough to trigger this resentment, I think a decade of being the best, while constantly hearing how the other is still a force, and will do it this year, is needed to make you truly loathe another team.
 
Listening to the bigger clubs talk about City and Chelsea as if they have had no money to spend makes me laugh .

As for rivals , I can say there are many that dislike United for many reasons , but its a complement in many ways , there is also myth somewhere out there that all Liverpool and Everton fans get on , there are many many militant Evrton fans out there and Liverpool fans are either not from the City or are very very delusional to actually know what some and I repeat some of them think . The rivalry is getting worse which is such a shame , you only have to see the police numbers now in the City centre in the evening after a "friendly derby" .

To correct someone also concerning the convict Kiwi , thats absolutely not true , the people who went down there were educated people , gold prospectors , land grabbers
, people who served the Empire well who were granted land .
The convict tag should be used for New South Wales persons .

And most of the UK residents has some form of Celtic , European extract in their dna , its not solely confined to the North West , Liverpool has an awful lot of Irish in the blood but they conveniently leave out what "Irish" is , I mean by that British Northern Irish (1000's came over as well) , for interest the highest are in the UK with Celtic blood is the West Midlands .

We'll never know. Busbys team were a bit before my time so I dont know if they would have gone on to win multiple titles. I do know though that up until 2 years ago at no point in history had united won more league titles than Liverpool, even before the 70's they didn't so historically Liverpool have been more successful, even pre 70's. So I really think United fans take for granted how important Fergie is for them and how good a manager he actually is. Pre Fergie they were 3rd or 4th most successful.

As for their owners, they remind me very much of Hicks and Gillett in the way they are draining the club of money and loading it up with debt. I feel at some point its going to end up the same way it did with Hicks and Gillet, with the Glazers being forced out which inevitably has an impact on the field. As soon as Ferguson is gone and Utd have a couple of lean years you watch the protests against the Glazers kick off.
 
They already have haven't they ? They formed their own side and have their green and gold protest ? Fair play and respect , in my humble United are the larger side and always have been , but both only survive the way they do because of their cling on element and Kettering red or Oslo day tripper .

When did these1000's of British Northern Irish come over to Liverpool mate and what was the reason?

Do you mean as part of the diaspora caused by the famine?, there was an 'Irish' community in Liverpool pre-famine.

Any links to your 'West Midlands' point?
 
On iPhone so can not link will do so though , i hardly think an Irish community here pre famine is relevant as the blood would now be how many generations now I don't know , 10 ?
The northern Irish British have come steadily for the last 100 years , my relations are Irish/Welsh but I don't consider myself anything other than British/English .

What you consider yourself is fine by me mate but the same doesn't go for everyone.

The Irish community in Liverpool pre-famine is a valid point due to the fact that your point about 'British' north of Ireland settlers somehow ended up here in their thousands but with no specifics.

You're acting like a frustrated orangeman trying to prove there's no connection between Ireland and Liverpool.
 
Why would I do that when my relations from Ireland were catholic and from Mallow ?
At my wedding I had two people from Ireland as my ushers , does not sound bitter to me ,

There is a fact ignorant people with no knowledge of Liverpool understand that Liverpools links come from both sides of the divide and beliefs , respect to all I say .

So Sam's in the southend along with other orange halls are packed on the 12th to celebrate the slaughter of Irish catholic's in their homeland.

The pubs that are packed on the 17th are celebrating the life of the patron saint of Ireland.

Can you see the difference?

Of course I can but thats not the point of what we were talking about was it ? St Patricks Day is also celebrated by Northern Irish people as well you know ?

Oh ay people, calm down, eh? I made the Kiwi post to illustrate that from the other side of the globe they don't see any difference between Scousers and Mancs. I took Page's comments as being ironic. I'm sure Manda, my Kiwi ex, would have laughed at them too.

And ffs, as someone with mixed Irish Catholic and Prod background (like Lennon and McCartney and possibly half of Merseyside) with a tad of Chinese thrown in too, one of the successes of our city (and Manchester too, for that matter) is that families and neighbourhoods are NOT seperated by the religious divides of Crmwell, the Potato Famine and the Black and Tans. The irony of this is that my many friends and in-laws from the Republic seem less hung up on this than some on this post.

Of course i know, but so what, there is a difference between celebrating triumphalism over Ireland and celebrating a patron saints day.
