Why did a rivalry never develop between Liverpool and City?

You could say Liverpool fans have a decent relationship with Leeds fans, Blackburn Rovers fans, Bolton Wanderers fans along with City fans. As an earlier poster said, ''Be friends with others that hate your worst enemy''. There is quality in numbers. The earlier mentioned have a mutual hatred of all things Manchester United.

I think the Leeds-Liverpool thing comes from before we both really hated Man U though, from the Revie and Shankly days, and when the Anfield Kop applauded the title-winning Leeds side in 1969. As I understand it, Liverpool didn't really hate Man U until they bought a lot of trophies in the early 90s, so we couldn't have been mutual enemies of theirs?

That said, I've heard a lot of the Leeds-Liverpool games erupted into violence at either ground, and the Liverpool visitors to Elland Road in '09 weren't too flattering, so maybe my view of it as a friendship is nonsense.

Blackburn do not have a rivalry with United. Any football fan who knows anything about the game knows who Blackburn have a rivalry with.

Both these clubs have secondary rivalries with Preston and Bolton.

Also Liverpool are not well liked in Leeds, not quite as bad as United but hardly best of pals.

History shows Lancashire and Yorkshire do not get on, regardless of which clubs and what sport or indeed anything else.

And I certainly wouldn't associate them with Lancashire. When would you ever meet a scouser under the age of 40 who'd willingly call themselves a Lancastrian? They're reluctant to even admit to being English!

Actually moved from Beeston now as its **** hole far worse than any of the Lancashire towns you named bar Nelson and maybe certain areas of Burnley.

Leeds and Burnley have a rivalry of sorts, though that may be more down to hooliganism rather that anything else.

I made the Lancashire reference to days gone by. Also nobody cares what scousers consider themselves, English, Irish, Scouse, ****s. They cn be whoever they like.

I lived in Colne for a few years and went to school there so I have a very good understanding about all things Blackburn and Burnley. I still visit every so often for a night out ( not recommended, though Burnley used to be decent for a small town ). Unlike yourself they are not all morons ( again there is evidence to suggest otherwise ) and dont hate clubs that by all intensive purposes are of no concern to them.

Yeah, Leeds vs Burnley games are quite interesting. You can always count on a hearty rendition of 'Istanbul' from the local urchins at Turf Moor, and they usually take a decent crowd to Elland Road and make a good noise. Their hatred of all things Yorkshire is fuelled by the fact we've beaten them in our last four games, three of which came from comebacks. Typical one-sided semi-local lower league game for a club like us really. Add Barnsley, Donny, Bradford, Huddersfield, Hull, Boro, Blackpool and Preston to that list too.

Anyway Liverpool and City dont have a rivalry because unless its based purely on historical events dating back 100s of years like the building of the Manchester Ship Canal what exactly is the rivalry going to be based on?

City are insignificant to Liverpool, they are not insignificant to United because they are our neighbours so we have a rivalry like every local derby on earth.

If anything, Id say Man Utd and Everton are like best buddies!

I think Moyes and Fergie- and other management staff are "best buds"- I think the fans are somewhat conflicted. There is the natural dislike between the two cities- but the comradeship between the two premiers acts as a unifying force. Also- their shared dislike of pool.

I'd say Everton and Untied are both friends and enemies at the same time.

I'm from Cheshire, not Liverpool- although plenty of the people I grew up with were from the city. I remember when I was a lad (and I'm not that old) the rivalry between the two Merseyside clubs was banter- not hate. I don't know if in the city itself it was any different- but I remember everyone would always ask you "red-or-blue" - didn't matter which you answered- you were not discriminated against. Maybe some banter- but none of the vitriolic stuff that people spew today.

There again... back then I never took football all that seriously myself... it's something I've grown into slowly throughout my life- so maybe I was just blissfully unaware of the problems.

As far as I understand it, a rivalry never developed between City and Liverpool cos City have never been rivals to Liverpool. Same reason Liverpool have no real rivalry with clubs like Blackburn or Preston - regardless of their location and some past success they are not on the same scale as Liverpool, and have never really competed for trophies in the same period.

If Liverpool manage to drag themselves up the table and challenge for titles in the future then they may start to develop a rivalry with City, like they developed with Chelsea during the Mourinho period, but City will have to win a whole lot of trophies before the rivalry even approaches that of Utd.

Pretty sure Utd and Everton did have a strong rivalry up until the start of the 1970s, at which point Utd, Liverpool and Everton all had about seven titles each. But that rivalry has gotten much less important as Liverpool have moved ahead of Everton in terms of success.

At the moment, as some people have pointed out, Utd and Everton have less of a rivalry due to "the enemy of my enemy". But also, for me at least, I greatly admire how Everton have succeeded with their business model, and massively punched above their weight despite operating on a budget that is tiny compared to that of Liverpool, Utd, Chelsea, City and Arsenal. Look at how a sell to buy policy did for clubs like Arsenal, Blackburn, Newcastle and Liverpool in the past, and then consider that Everton have operated on that policy for more than a decade and rarely finished outside the top eight.
