Talking about Ropey League, if we got there I don't think it would quite be a case of us totally blowing it off. Clearly we would need 3-4 players more than we currently have to compete in both (plus replacing the fringe players who move on). I think Nicola would sanction that, on the basis that if we finish 6th or 5th this season (not saying we will), he will expect us to be 4th the next, so we could maintain the bigger squad size. And on the strict instruction that progressing at home is the priority over Europa.

PS they should still scrap this competition and expand the Champions League slightly to accommodate.

I think the Europa League needs rejigging but if anything I'd rather the CL was compressed rather than expanded, I'm all for making sure that teams from smaller leagues can get a chance to compete on the biggest stage, but it kind of weakens the competition a little for me that every year there's 6 or 7 teams that can't even compete on a game-to-game basis.

Personally I think the best thing to do is use the Europa League as an entry-point into the CL (Because clearly as a league in it's own right it is moribund), which I believe they are starting to do at least for the winners in 2016 or 2017, I reckon it should be that the winners get straight into the CL groups, and runners-up into the play-off. I think that would galvanise some interest for teams just hanging on the edge of their nation's CL qualifying spots, as for example realistically for us it would probably be easier to win the Europa League than it would be to breach the top four. Teams would take it more seriously, more people would watch, there'd be more money in it so teams would take it even more seriously, and so on.

Totally agree with this format, but only if the whole CL losers drop into the Europa league is also scrapped so 'smaller teams' in the Europa get a chance in the Champions league rather than it being a back-stop for the 'bigger clubs' to get there.

That's basically what I want, so teams that underperform in the CL don't get a second chance, and smaller Europa-standard teams who cause some upsets get rewards with ties against the bigger teams. The actual EL trophy doesn't mean much.

I wonder what % of Europa League semi/quarter finalists come from the 3rd place Champions League group route. I would research it myself but chances are it's not that many and my argument would be invalid <laugh>

Since the renaming, I count nine of sixteen teams in the semis of Europa League who were relegated there from either the CL playoffs or group stage.
