I think it is just a generic Southern accent. On my various travels round the country/world people were shocked to find out I was born and bred in Bristol. Everyone thought I was from South London and everyone from Bristol sounds like Ian Holloway. I have mates with Bristolian accents and mates born and bred here without them, I think now there is just a generic southern accent aswell as the more regional ones.

I couldn't understand any ****er when I went to Leeds though, horrible accent.

good thread this - it's dragged a few occasional posters out into the open! and will hopefully encourage them to contribute to the other threads dominated by the "well known members" who to be fair we've heard enough from! (me included) :)

I've been all over. Botley, Southampton, Hedge End and for the last 30yrs, Fishers Pond. You name it, I've lived there.

That's the most complicated area name I've ever come across.Must take a long time when anyone asks "So, where you from Chilcs?"
It all (apart from Bristol) used to be simply Somerset until the 1990’s when the areas around Weston Super Mare and Bath were removed from the county and given silly names. Bristol, of course, has always been both a city and a county in its own right but I included it because it’s by far the biggest place in this region!
