frankies cafe on shields beach. me mam used to take some bread and butter and buy one bag of chips between four of us. had a pair of me dads old football boots with wooden studs that you used to nail on. and don't get me started on leather footbals, cos when it rained they would soak up about a gallon of water and take yer heed off, or leave you scarred for life if you got "laced"

notariannis hell that brings back memories all good, what about the Biz Bar near the odeon and Esquires clothes shop always remember the owners V12 E type jag. and buying my ben sherman and brutus shirts with my first money and bloody hell the colours bright purple, green, marroon and buying matching loons to go with them £1 no pockets no waistband nowt wonder they stopped up.

Help me Rooch was the Biz Bar not near the Ritz?.....
 
Im with you Dick....From Silksworth Pit Heap (Its a ski slope now I think) to Sunderland there used to be a railway line with a chuffer....Two things we used to do...lay nails on the tracks to flatten them out for the tips of our arrows....then hide in the shrub at the side of the line to have a go at stickin them in the bogies....they never did....the nails never stayed in anyway and the bows always broke....The other thing was to try and catch a lift on the back`un .....easy cos it was slow...Somebody must have seen cos a gadgie was employed....I can still see him now duffle coat and wellies turned ower.......couldnt get up the bank after chasin us......We chucked stones at him....He said he knew where we lived.......He caught one of us by the arm......this lad went on to nearly play for Leeds....When grabbed he screamed...."Mr...... Ive got stitches in me arm...!".....Release of grip..... and he was gone........We didnt play that particular game for a while after that.....The consensus was he might have known where we lived.....Anyway games were seasonal...there were thousands of others....
 
Aye cinema on the corner and the Biz Bar round the corner going toward Park Lane.

Searching all the back alleys to find a piece of hardboard to knock the fire escape bars up on the inside of the doors.
Used on both ABC and the Odeon with excellent results, then crawling into the cinema proper on hands and knees so as to not get caught. :)
 
Hello again Rooch i remember when the Biz Bar was born...It was brand new and the rumour was it was full of ....or only a place for....."Beatnicks"......It was suppose to be Italian influenced and therfore at the time was looked down upon by a lot of people as a load of rubbish.....those are my memories.....just recently ....last couple of years walking me silver haired owld mother round she tells me that pre war she remembers all of the area around the back of the Ritz...ABC...ALL the way to the bus station full of pens with sheep and livestock etc....Kids were fiercely local to Saturday morning pictures and stuck with where you went....even if you got a clattering with some wicked b..ches torch....hahaha!
 
Hi Dyavvy I never used to miss my saturday morning pictures at the picture house or the flea pit as it was known I think it used to be where the entrance to the Bridges is now, also remember going to the rink every saturday and walking round in circles all night long what the hell was that all about and booing argent off the stage as they were crap and then watching free one of the best bands ever in my opinion. Theres another thread somebody could start all the bands in the sixties and seventies, I also liked the local band brass alley. ( hell im'e old )
 
Dont talk to me about the back doors of the ABC the only time i ever payed to get in was with my girlfriend and i went straight down to the toilets when half a dozen lads came in through the back doors and I got thrown out with them, no mobile phones then to let her know i had to wait half an hour before i got in through the back doors again and she was wondering why the hell id'e been at the bog so long funny enough i didn't see her again.
