What's troubling Poch?

This may very well sum up the problem. Pochettino works best with young squads, The Spurs squad ain't young any more!!

Of course this masks part of the issue
* Wanyama's not just getting older, but he's broken
* Rose is not just getting older, but getting found out
* Eriksen is not just getting older, but getting lazy/moody
* Aurier's not just getting older, he's also not getting smarter
* Alli and Dier and not just getting older, but getting injured on a frequent basis

And don't forget Pochettino may have put his left shoe on before his right one on the morning of the game.
 
I’m still not buying it

A Football manager that can’t work with players at the peak of their powers. I’m not denying the issues Poch is having within our squad and the need to get rid. I just find it odd that a manager thinks he can’t work with players beyond 25 because they are deemed too old.

Yet the guy dreams of managing Real Madrid...the egos there will chew him up and **** him out within a month.

The following are not at their peak
* Wanyama (broken)
* Rose (appears to have passed his peak)
* Eriksen (stroppy that no Spanish club paid any attention to what his peak might be during the summer)
* Aurier (turns out his peak's not as peaky as we thought it would be)
* Alli (four hamstring injuries in 18 months, flattening his peak)
* Dier (injuries and illness cost him a large chunk of last season, flattening his peak)

These aren't issues playing FIFA, but they certainly are when dealing with players in real life. Look at what happened to Arsenal where years of Wenger mollycoddling Walcott, Wilshere and Gibbs under the impression they would suddenly turn into quality players rather than the reality of their being decent players whose being decent was hampered by Walcott and Wilshere constantly being injured

Tbf I sold Eriksen on FIFA quite early doors too. Wanted a wage rise.

I agree about all the reasons...none of them are just age related though which was my problem

I am enjoying a little late sun in Italy and have just finished Pochs book, which I enjoyed and was hoping may give an insight to what has changed. But the book doesn't actually offer much insight really. Poch comes across as a good motivator and a generally good bloke that players get on with, but I didn't read the book and come away from it thinking that Poch is a great tactical genius and maybe it really is the case that the messages are no longer getting through.

Yeah he's very emotional about everything. Hope I'm wrong but I do think that is his Achilles heel

I couldn't spot any of the info or insight you refer to, Spurf. That article could've been written by any one of a dozen posters on this forum. None of us are called 'Guillem' though, so I doubt anyone would have published it. Very little by way of 'news' here. Generally speaking, I find Ballague to be the spanish equivalent of Phil Mcnumpty: blessed with an ability to state the obvious in such a way that it comes across as cutting edge journalism.

Not having a dig at you Spurf, but the entirety of Ballague's take on matters has been discussed ad nauseum by Spurs fans across the globe for months now.

So here's a few quotes from Clive Allen, who actually has experience with the club and how things work behind the scenes

“I’ve had dealings with Daniel. The one thing that always strikes me is how focused he is on the football club and taking it forward.

“He knows what he wants and he invariably going about getting it done as well. I think you have to give him so much credit for what he’s delivered. That doesn’t happen overnight, it’s been a process. It’s been a long process and he’s done that.

“I’m sure in all walks of life people have relationships with their bosses that are difficult and that’s certainly has been the case for a number of managers with Daniel I’m sure.

Collating a couple of posts I've made elsewhere on here, but the issues come down to the following factors

a.) Full backs not providing width, which was key to Poch's system for his time at the club, meaning so much of our play gets choked up going through the middle - which is especially noticible in comparison to how The Sheikh Mansour Team and Saltypool play, as their touch distribution is almost identical to ours in it becomes a lot more centralised in the final third of the pitch - but the difference is they have width from the full backs, while our full backs appear to vanish off the face of the earth once they get near the halfway line

b.) Aurier not being progressive, as he was expected to be the Kyle Walker replacement bombing up from deep yet more often than not he's one of the least progressive full backs in the league, while in comparison both Danny Rose and KWP are playing the sort of progressive game we expect - although they're far from the most progressive full backs in the Premier League, as the full backs of Leicester, Saltypool, The Sheikh Mansour Team and Chelsea are all notably more progressive going forward, and a fair number of them are also more capable defensively

c.) A lack of an out ball on the left flank, meaning that while players on the right have Lamela getting into position to receive the ball from his teammates, on the left flank there's no out ball which means the options to our left back are either to pass it back to the centre back or try to square it into the centre instead of making a progressive pass

So what's the solution?

If you ask the Reddit/Twitter crowd they all come to the conclusion that a new RB is the answer, as obviously they'll be more effective than Aurier has been this season (and Trippier last) - but you ask me, my suggestion is a DM is what is necessary as it's not a coincidence that our full backs were so devastating back when we were able to lock down central midfield with the Dier/Dembele or Wanyama/Dembele pivots that allowed the full backs freedom to maraud forwards, while the Winks/Ndombele/Sissoko trio simply does not lock down midfield so we're not on the front foot as much

Don't get me wrong, I'd happily swap Aurier for Atal, but only doing that won't fix the issue - the issue is we need a Kante-type player alongside Ndombele
