The one thing I don’t understand is refusing to correctly refer to someone as a preferred method. Granted it’s not the same but I changed my last name via deed poll as I hated my father growing up and I had, for lack of a better term, an identity crisis due to not really feeling attached with my name id had for 16 years.

Every time someone got it wrong, I politely reminded them and moved on with my day as did they. If someone who has transitioned or is transitioning asks politely to be referred to as a different pronoun I don’t get the push back personally? Yes if people abuse it and chop and change then I get the skepticism but there’s plenty of good people just wanting to live their life.

To cap it all, the wife (from Panama), alluded to in the attached tome, did con fez her hubby was beret close to the truth.
She may have been talking a load of pith of course.

I wish (ironically) I could remember who I leant my copy to...

Also Sachs was the inspiration (from a book) for the film Awakenings... Awokenings?

I've read a few people claiming these issues are about respect, but they tend to take a very narrow view of which opinions should be respected.

As a couple of examples, if someone wants to delude themselves they are some other gender or creature, that's their choice, however, whilst I wouldn't try to change them or even pass comment unless they raise it, my choice is to find it ridiculous. That being the case, they should respect my opinion, and not force me to join in their fantasy games by calling him her etc.

Likewise, religious people can worship whatever sky pixie they like, until they push their beliefs onto others. I can't commit blasphemy if I find their belief system to be based on a provable fantasy.

I think the people that claim none of these things are happening should consider why people feel the need to soap box in support of what others laugh at as 'woke' for the want of a description.

Some people just seem to love labels and binary thinking.

And there you quite clearly show you do exactly what the people you disagree with do. You are also delusional and refuse to view an opposing view as valid <party>

You need to explore why your and my age group have been labelled gammons etc I grew up at the same time as you . There is a prevalent derogatory attitude towards us because ‘ we have all the money , are costing the young ones a fortune , we have old fashioned views of the Empire , we are clogging up the NHS and also can afford the houses they want and we say things like ‘ we had to save for what we wanted ‘ I can’t comment on your world but I listen to radio and check out a wide range of news channels and political and economics commentators , I’m not being superior just telling you what I’m interested in .
Just a point but saw a video of a pro Palestine March where the Union Jack was burnt and some middle aged white woman was carrying a stuffed effigy of a baby reflecting what recently happened - I really hope she wasn’t a Palestinian sympathiser if so it was despicable and I know there’s faults on both sides so support neither .

So are you really saying you and your family at the time didnt titter at all at any of those ‘ comedies’ of the time ? I really find it hard to believe , I definitely remember finding the programme funny to some extent but some of the expressions I didn’t . I’m not accusing you but there’s an awful lot of hypocrisy at times from posters who’ve never laughed at anything sexist , racist , mysoginist so they can pile on those who are honest about it and then presumably feel good about themselves . If that’s not true then we have the most perfect group of people on the planet here . I’m so glad I am part of their ‘ family.

Personally, I thought stuff like Love Thy Neighbour and Mind Your Language were utterly ****e, they were the Mrs Browns Boys of their day. Rising Damp and Til Death Us Do Part were far better, if anything, they were the polar opposite of the other two.

Never really paid a huge amount of attention, but I always assumed the Alf Garnett character was intended as a parody.

Me too , my dad watched them laughed his head off but my brothers and I can testify he never used the ‘words’ from the shows nor ever that we can recall said anything racist in our earshot . Maybe he just saw them as comedies however crass .

Actually I’ve got sucked in to a topic that really is never ending and difficult to fully discuss on a forum . It creates spaces for people either to get angry , enjoy conflict , relieve mental boredom and the worst pigeon hole people they don’t really know , leaving a potentially false perception of that person .

Frustrating game and infuriating loss last night, Spring. Not really supposed to hit the wife anymore due to woke policies, so we have to use this forum as an escape valve instead ;)

A lot of Palestinians and supporters hold the UK partly responsible for the situation because we conceded territory we promised to hand over to the Palestinians and gave it to Israel instead, who were waging what was then a terrorist war against British controlled Palestine - many British soldiers were killed by Israeli terrorist attacks whilst defending the territory and because of WW2 and the sympathy towards/need to help the Jewish population at the time , large areas were conceded to Israel pre and post war... As usual there are opinions either way on the matter and different interpretations, and i am just writing why 'some' Palestinian supporters hold the UK responsible.

So 15 pages in, have we decided what is and isn't woke yet? Or will this give the transfer threads a run for their money?

Not sure theres been 3 specific examples listed. But ultimately both Woke and Gammon are just terms used to set a divisive narrative, because if we're all squabbling together, then ultimately we're not engaging with what's actually going on and holding the real vested interests to account

So we're cancelling wokeism?

They were simple sit coms on mainstream telly and everyone laughed at them. No one was offended. It was harmless comedy. I wasn't a fan of them at all although I liked Rising Damp and still do, only today it comes on with a warning that people may be offended!! That is woke. How can you be offended by a sit com? If anything Don Warrington's character comes across as the intelligent one and takes the piss out of Rigsby, the landlord.
Mrs Browns Boys is an insult to peoples intelligence, but people must like it otherwise it wouldn't get aired. You cannot please all of the people all of the time. If you don't like it, switch off or turn over, not change the formats to box tick anyone that might be offended.

Think that’s the issue. Some people have different interpretations making the insult use rather odd and vague

Calling your next door neighbour a Nig Nog was painfully unfunny in 1975 and it's even more painfully unfunny now.
So was calling the white fella a 'white honky'. Personally I thought Love Thy Neighbour was awful. So I didn't watch it and I wasn't offended in the least.
I do get offended when I continually hear these days that my generation are 'the white privileged' or that I am a privileged white male.
No-one was calling us the white privileged when our parents brought us up in rented two up two down houses with no bathroom, outside toilets and no gardens and as kids we played on the bombed buildings with cardboard in our shoes for soles and we received a basic education in old Victorian school's, 50 to a class, with no central heating, inside toilets or playing fields and got kicked out to find work at 15.

You could probably just substitute 'woke' and 'gammon' for the words we used to use but were slightly less derisory, such as 'progressive' and 'reactionary', but as I say, the intent is to set an increasingly divisive narrative, so we are where we are.
