After Brexit, those places will have to cope by being 'flooded' by Indian, Asian, and African nationals who will be required to plug the recruitment gaps Brexit will cause in industries such as healthcare. I have two friends that work at Ipswich hospital and they are already having to bring in Philippine and Indian healthcare workers to offset departing European doctors and nurses.

The numbers from the EU are 'negligible' as they make up such a small proportion* of the net immigration numbers. For instance, there are far more immigrants joining from non EU (Asia etc.) than from mainland Europe. Immigration from outside the EU is an area that we already have control over, so the whole immigration argument pre, during and post Brexit is flawed as the Government has had opportunities to reduce the numbers but hasn't (as Nuggets has pointed out, they have provided skills and experience that we don't have in this country)

As for the point about the government being incompetent, it gets no argument from me as I think we all agree that for many years we've been poorly run, but to flip that argument I would counter that is precisely why leaving seems a bad decision as we haven't been able to operate properly and therefore being left on our own to 'make our own decisions' seems suicidal

*The Percentages I refer to are widely published in a lot of media (not the red top tabloids) but there have been articles detailing the percentage of where immigration comes from and Non EU areas such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Philippines make up the largest proportion and Brexit or no Brexit that will remain (if not increase to counter the drop of immigration from Scandanavia and Germany, Holland, Spain, France etc. that fill the many skill gaps in areas such as healthcare)

At the end of the day, it’s all about immigration. Nothing else makes sense as I think we’ve just proven. And that’s a completely daft concept because the English are all immigrants anyway.

The problems we have in this country haven’t been caused by immigrants, but by our own government’s policies.

The majority of people in this country aren’t racist, but the press and media have whipped up the anti immigrant and anti Muslim hysteria, which suits the Tories because meanwhile they get away literally with murder.

If you're going to slag the Torues off for racism then it's only fair to point out Labours disgusting treatment of the Jewish community.

I wasn’t slagging off the Tories for racism; although they are just as bad if not worse. I was slagging then off for creating a swathe or homelessness and poverty and dessimating our schools and hospitals.

There are racist Labour members and voters certainly, and there has been some disgusting behaviour directed toward Jewish Labour MPs and members, but the majority if they hold any view on the subject are anti-Israeli government or anti-Zionist because of the plight of the Palestinians, a nuance always lost amongst the headlines and soundbites. Labour’s handling of the situation has indoudbtedly been incredibly poor.

However I dont think that debate justifies anti immigrant sentiment or abuse and violence directed toward Muslims in this country do you?

And many of them are doing all the vital jobs that young white men dont or wont do. And they pay their taxes, contribute to the general good of society, try to learn English and he ones I have met and speak to, are very pleasant.
And like Dave, I have been amazed and grateful to all the doctors, nurses and staff at NHS hospitals.

One of the saddest facts, going back in years, we as a nation have never been told what Europe does for us, we have this strange uneasy relationship, we don't know enough, and the extreme right wing press peddle myths and porkies. I am lucky to have worked, travelled in Europe and just hope the next generation can too.

In fact, I am i Europe right now, as guest speaker to a French Canals AGM conference, to help both our twinned canals think about applying for serious EU funds.....my presentation, a ppt and in French, is on 29th March, Brexit Day mk 1!! <laugh> <cheers>

With the greatest respect Scowey I believe you have missed the point I was making
if we stay in eu and have to abide to their rules then we have absolutely no control over how many eu immigrants arrive here, while I have no personal vendetta against any immigrants, surely you have to agree that having no control over the numbers allowed in is absolutely madness, at its peak there were reported of in excess of 4 million immigrants here, while people may see that this is no problem what we haven't done is address the infrastructure problem e.g. schools, housing,NHS.jobs. This has put enormous pressure on local authorities who have to put up with this with no extra funding, which in turn makes local people who are facing increasing difficulty in finding houses, jobs, and even doctors lean towards racist feelings.

as for eu workers doing 'jobs that the English wont do' this is exactly the kind of slave labour thinking that drives wages down and cause huge resentment, and as for the NHS, no-one is disputing that the NHS is heavily reliant on foreign workers and no-one has ever said that all foreigners should be sent home, what we are saying is that we MUST have control of the numbers

Good debate lads by the way

The irony is that even the name England is derived from the Angles - immigrants who settled in Britain from modern day Germany.

Demographic changes have been occurring since the dawn of time and they will continue to. The population of Britain and the population of the World is inevitably going to increase. It did so rapidly during the 20th century as a result of improved living conditions and healthcare advances and continues to. These forces of nature are not going to be halted by leaving the EU.

On jobs, automation is putting far more people out of work than immigration. Not that immigrants put people out of work. There is not some fixed number of jobs that there are for people to do. As the population increases so do the number of jobs.
Mechanisation changed the nature of work. Then did computing. And now automation is. People need to be adaptable. The huge irony in all this is that Brexit is costing thousands of people their jobs, no more starkly than in the car industry.

But it is not about numbers, it’s some misguided notion that it is OUR territory (whoever WE are) and we don’t want people who are not like us to come and spoil it and cause problems.

Instead we need to focus on solutions and that requires co-operation and working with people from other nations.

The only thing Brexit is going to achieve is Britain being left behind on infrastructure, technology, medicine and other fields that would help us solve the problems of the rest of the 21st century. It is not going to affect Britain beyond that because the younger generations are not so shortsighted as can be seen in their voting habits and activism.

By pooling resources with the EU we achieved more, faster. Our businesses benefited from Research, Development, Innovation and Training funding from the EU, whilst our own Tory government has systematically dismantled domestic funding for start ups and innovation. Our universities and innovators have been working on a whole range of projects that will still go on, just without our best minds many of whom will relocate.

Brexit is simply Britain cutting off its nose to spite its face.

I`m sorry Hampy but that is absolutely horse ****, the car industry is taking a massive hit at the moment because all the manufacturers are heading towards electric cars and this is happening worldwide.
Nissan are re-locating to Japan because previously they had to pay tariffs to the eu to export their cars, a way round this was to create a deal with England that included building factories and use us as a gateway into eu. Since last year the eu bloc has removed the tariffs that Japan had to pay thus removing the need to operate from Enland, their CO even went to great pains to explain to the government and the general public that this was the ONLY reason for the re-location

so to blame Brexit or (the most infuriating phrase) the 'Brexit uncertainty' for the change in car manufacturing in England is absolutely a non-starter, and to use such a mis-leading and non-fact sentence to try to prove your point is, well, thought you were better than that

The funding from the EU that you talk about is basically the money that we have already paid into the EU budget! They are only paying back some of the money that we have already paid in!

Absolutely. So the notion that we send all this money to the EU is nonsense. We get back far more than we put in.

Of course changing technology is a factor. But whether Nissan would have moved their manufacturing at some point Brexit has certainly hastened their decision. Jaguar Land Rover are moving production to Slovakia because of Brexit. Or perhaps it’s just a coincidence. Companies are relocating their HQs to Europe. You can bury your head in the sand if you like, that’s up to you.

It’s not bollocks at all JWM. Why do you think that funding is important? It stimulates growth and creates jobs. Even if our own government ran these programmes themselves and invested other money the EU does there is not suddenly going to be a big chunk of money that we’re saving and it certainly isn’t going to make up for lost trade and investment.

The fact is that they won’t because government spending is politicised to keep the government in power. Like the DUP money and the bribe offered to traditional Labour towns.
