I know what you mean when you say he struggled to show his true potential. But I think thats mainly due to the standard of the premier league that he struggled to adjust too. I mean, the guy had only been playing in the MLS and the BBV before moving to the premier league where it is a whole different level.
You can't compare Mclean to Altidore. Mclean is one of these players that is a work horse. He'll run around all day and try to feed off scraps whereas Jozy was one of these players who (imo) had raw talent but struggled to produce at the highest level.
Is really only A year since we saw the back of Altidore but I see his myth continues. Where do I begin. His lavk of goal scoring record speaks for itself but for the rest....he ws neither strong, quick or particularly skilful. he was not a big man 5'10 ish and the weakest forward I have ever seen. His career has been built on falling over at the slightest touch to win free kicks...and this is where you get the mythical 10 gol assists from. He didn't get the better of any premier defender in a physical challenge. He never won an header; I saw him head the ball twice in the whole time he was with us and they were defensive ones. He was not quick in the sense he could beat or get away from defenders...hence the falling over. Well is that enough?..Oh...as well...it was Brown's perseverance of Altidore that was the single main reason we were relegated.
Not the fact that we had a leaky defence, shocking away record, negative tactics, injuries to key players and no player prolific in front of goal? Clown.
This mythical ten goal contribution is fact, not opinion which is what your comment is based on. How you can say he was not quick or strong is completely ridiculous. He was able to out pace the likes of Alan Hutton (which is no mean feat) and outmuscle the likes of Andre Bikey (who's fecking huge!). Is it just me who remembers his stupidly sexy turn against burnley at home? Or watching Shawcross physically ripping his shorts off after a neat turn and turn of pace? Yes he didn't finish it but it showed he had good feet. I don't seem to recall mentioning his ariel ability once. I know he wasn't huge and was quite useless in the air. Mainly due to the fact that he closed his eyes and jumped directly into the opposition centre half. He was hardly Browns starting striker was he? He made 28 appearances in total and quite a lot of those were from the bench. So your response on the whole is bullshit.
Fair enough! I must have skim read it. I think they're two completely different players though. Then again I've compared Alex Chamberlain with Andy Carol on another thread
Fair point, i see where you are coming from. I imagine Adebola will be used as an impact player brought on in the 2nd half to give us something different, though he could start if required, horses for courses as they say. I think we'll see another striker come in, if we got an injury/suspension it could leave us short. Plus i think Cullen will be loaned out to league 1/2 to get more experience.
I'm all for looking for the positives in our players, but having watched pretty much every minute Altidore ever played for us, I'd have to say he was poor.
Most of his assists consisted of falling over in or around the box, he rarely used his pace for anything constructive and he was about as strong as my daughter.
He was poor in Spain, he was poor in England and now he's been poor in Turkey. I expect him to be back in the MLS soon and I think it's probably the best place for him.

Stats are stats and I'm sticking to them . Someone who contributed to almost a 3rd of our goals in a very poor team who rarely got the ball past the opposition half unless it was booted up by one of the defenders, can hardly be awful.

I will predict now that Jozy Altidore will never be a regular starter in a decent team, he's simply not good enough.

According to the premier league he is credited with 7 assists in our relegation year (he was joint 28th) and that would include falling over around the box to win free kicks. I liked Altidore but I have no statistical evidence to back it up whatsoever, it's probably because he was signed by Phil Brown and I'm a bit of a ****er.
With regards to the whole Brown/Pearson's signings debate:
A. Half of Phil Brown's signings were made in the Premiership, it's impossible to tell what Nigel would do in such a situation as he'll never take us there.
B. Apparently Big Nige hasn't had that much money? How much did we sign Fryatt and McLean for? How does that compare to the transfer fees Phil Brown paid in the same division? I actually don't know, but if somebody could tell us that'd be awesome.

i think browny had a season an a half in champ big nige one....only time will tell if he takes us up
We paid £2.5m for Fryatt and Mclean, which is the same amount we paid for Zayatte and only slightly more than we paid for Ghilas or Halmosi.
We overpaid massively for the players we brought in while in the Premier League, I'm happy for Duffen to take the blame, rather than Brownie, but there's no doubt that we ****ed the job up big style.

Think Folan was our most expensive signing at £1 million, then you can add in the few 100k we paid for Garcia, Brown, Doyle, Hughes etc. Can't remember if we paid transfer fees or not for Pedersen or Okocha, but sure someone else does.

Yeah I make stuff up all the time and didn't actually bother looking online at various sources before coming to the conclusion that we scored 34 goals in the premier league, Altidore contributed to 8 (I thought it was 8 assists myself but we'll go with your 7) of those (I said AROUND ten before you start) which would mean Altidore contributed to around 23.5% of our goals for that season? Yeah terrible that. Apart from hunt and bullard, did anyone come close to that figure? No they didn't did they?
And yeah I don't go to the games either. I in fact purchase a season pass every season out of spite of some other chap who could've had the seat, then instead of going to the games by using the pass I purchase but don't use, I sit at home till the football league show comes on and then make judgements on the 4.5 seconds we have on it because I can get all of my information about that one game form those 4.5 seconds.
How about you come up with a researched response like I have done? Then when you look at all of the stats about that season, tell me that how a player who contributed to 23.5% of our goals (assuming that is in fact 8 goals he contributed too and not 9) from 28 appearances (most of which he didn't play the full 90 mins or he started on the bench) is as awful and such a bad signing as you have suggested. OLM may have said he was poor but lets face it. Apart from Hunt, who wasn't at least poor that season?
