his jersey is the top seller for Southampton to this day"

Is it?

Nothing like a good old unsubstantiated statement.

It's not the only one. He wasn't "kicked out of all [his teams] for being awful" and I don't even think he "ran around the field, going after the soccer ball like a possessed 5-year-old". I know it's a bit of a laugh but I think he gets worse every time the story is retold...

One of the younger saints are you? This is very well known

Yea only 17 and didnt pay loads of attention when i was young, i have never heard of this haha quality.. sounds a bit embarrassing mind, what was he actually like when he played (if anyone was watching)

Back when it happened: So bad everyone knew he wasn't the next big thing but didn't exactly punt the ball past his own keeper or spoon over from a yard out
Now: OMG LOL THE WORST THING EVER HE SCORED 20 OWN GOALS

One of those stories that gets more dramatic over time for comedic effect.

I heard he actually nearly scored straight away. I wonder if he would have been kept around for another game if he had :p What puzzles me though is did he not train with the team for a bit? How did they not know how bad he was?!

Yep. Tbh, hindsight is that wonderful thing yet again, where we all become experts. I didn't see it at the time, but I'd heard about it soon after, and years later I saw the videos and wondered what all the fuss was about. Sure he was poor, but we had some pretty poor players at Saints, and he didn't stand out too much, as being the worst ever. He even had a shot, from a tightish angle, which went straight at the keeper. He wasn't the first to do that and he won't be the last.

The real plonkers in all of it were Souness and the Club. Souness was fooled into thinking there was a potentially great player going for free. And it didn't reflect well on the Club that Souness was desperate to bring quality in, and had to look in the ultra cheapest direction, without making enough checks. The player was just trying to fulfill his ambitions, and who can blame him for trying..?

I was at that match and it wasn't as obvious as all that to people watching and he could have scored!! Obviously it was more obvious to Souness who subbed him, but why didn't it show up in training and why were we that desperate. He should have had a run out in the reserves before being thrown on.
