I agree that if you're in a strong enough position you should try to win, but the idea that only winning matters seems to me to display the arrogance of the fans of top clubs.
Surely football is its own raison d'être? After all, the majority of players worldwide never win much, and the majority of true fans never witness their teams lift a trophy.
I realise that your point is more to do with the idea of throwing a lesser competition deliberately, but I'm questioning the accepted wisdom that the only point in playing or watching football is to win. Only a lucky few are in that position.

I take your point about 95% of clubs. And I concur. But it is not arrogance to say that LFC Like city, Chelsea, Arsenal, the mancs and others like Real Madrid Barcelona and Bayern are not like the 95% of all clubs and because of their size and power they are expected to win most games. We enter a competition with the INTENTION of winning it. Now most of the time it won’t happen of course. But when a fan goes to a football match , of course he’d like to watch good football. But they mostly want their team to play that good football and most of all win the match. I have rarely met a Liverpool fan go to an important match saying I only wish us to play good football and I don’t care about the result.
