Could VVD be our POTS this season? 3 MOTM performances so far.

That would be a hard call. All of our players have played well this season. Some I have more confidence than others and some look a little rusty but I couldn't name one singularly bad perfromace from anyone yet.

I didn't watch game 2 only highlights, Astro above suggests Milner was motm. I felt Milner was also by a sliver the best player in game 1. Game 3 I'd probably give to Wijnaldum actually.

VvD looked very good in 1 and 3 for sure but picking a player of the season would be hard based on first three games.

Not taking risks isn't the same thing as a negative attitude.
Virgil rarely takes risks, that's why he's so solid compared with, say, Stones. The latter is a good ball player but gets caught out too often over-elaborating.

why did he do it. they had nobody capable of passing through us.

is the risk of losing a goal worth retaining possession rather than smashing the ball down field?

Many times.

You can't control a game without possession, unless as I said earlier you play Mourinho ball.

why do lfc play.out from back?

simple to draw 4 or 5 defensive.players forward and create space for.our own forwards.

If Alisson hoofs the ball then which of our forwards is going to win the header?

Instead he played it to Van Dijk, who played it to Milner, who almost put Salah through.

Milner's pass was too short, and Brighton cleared by hoofing, which led to us regaining possession, proving that pass > hoof

given how he can pass the ball not hoof it they can all get on the end of a good pass.

Forward players take risks - they have to in order to fool the opposition and create chances. Those who bemoan our poor defence yet applaud defenders for taking risks don't appear to see the contradiction there. Defenders need to be solid first and creative second.

I’m sorry Saint but that is a mentality straight from the 70’s, where English football was full of brutes looking to smash the ball and the whenever possible

There will be moments when a good hoof is required but that shouldn’t be the default mentality. We should be looking to build attacks from the back - if we simply reverted to clearing the ball all the time, we’d struggle massively because we don’t have a big midfield or attack who could win the ball.

Then we may as well as signed someone like Oblak who is an immense keeper but just hoofs the ball all day long.

My thinking is that a big reason as to why we chose Alisson is because of his ability on the ball. If we suppress him of that, then we lose half the player we signed.

We can’t pick and choose the risks he takes as it’s subjective. Alisson plays those lovely balls out to the full back but if he overhits, it goes out and we lose posssskon, or underhits and it’s intercepted. Fans will be then saying he shouldn’t be doing it either.

The best players in the world are at that level because they aren’t afraid to take risks. But more importantly, they pull those risks off most of the time. If Alisson takes those risks AND constsntly fails, then fair enough.

He will find his man most of the time and if we beat the forwards press, the damage to be done by our play in transition is massive.

It is only a matter of time we click and start dispatching teams as ruthlessly as last season but this time round we have enough security at the back.

It is only a matter of time we click and start dispatching teams as ruthlessly as last season but this time round we have enough security at the back.

Completely agree. But fans should expect him to make a mistake at some point. Not everything will come off - and when that happens, we should want him to still keep taking those risk.

Ability on ball = 12th minute. Take goal kick and literally passes it to TAA on half way line. it was a beautiful pass.... pass it long and short, retain possession, start attacks.... great.

try to be a baller out of your pen area and you will get caught.

stick to passing it, leave the tricks for the guys in the other half.

we train and practice for hours and hours to pick those passes out. but nobody trains for a solo run or a move nobody is expecting.... was salah off and running expecting alisson to beat the guy and pass it to him. nope.

wheres the reward?

the team is set up to stretch sides and be looking for those passes through the lines... thats where his ability comes in. press up and he will have the ball over your head and to our feet in midfield, sit off and he will pass short.

I saw that too. stick with that stuff.. leave the cryuff turns to lallana when he comes on for 5mins and leave chipping the ball over forwards heads alone. Thats how you win titles.

I agree though... we have not "clicked" yet.

I agree that his style of passing will enable us to beat high presses. Teams will inevitably sit right off and just not press at all so him sweeping up will become more important. a few games where he pings a glorious pass to salah ala gerrard and teams will just sit off in their own half. That will move our back 4 line higher so sweeping up will be critical. If he tries beat the one forward chasing the ball and play a pass he will be caught out.
