What do you think about this latest change to the beautiful game? Do you think it will improve the standards of refereeing. It appears that the PL is going to use it in a slightly different way to other jurisdictions as they are stressing it will only be used to 'help' the referee.

So far I've found it makes refs lazy and it's lost its credibility due to it having 2 interpretations to the handball rule, one in Europe the other in domestic football...it's quite pathetic.

So for me it's the people interpreting it that need to learn to use it right.

My main gripe with VAR is that it removes some of the euphoria that comes with scoring a goal due to the wait when and if it is required.

The farce thst was the Rochdale FA Cup replay at Wembley completely changed my mind on VAR.
The decision to disallow Lamela's goal cos of a Llorente foul, even though he was clearly being fouled first was a nonsense.
The decision to disallow Son's penalty goal and to book him was beyond a joke.
It proved to me that decision making is still going to be as open to the stupidity of refs as it ever has been.
Nothing I have seen since has changed my mind

What people failed to consider is that, as VAR makes it harder for referees such as Dave Elleray, Graeme Poll, Howard Webb, Mark Clusterfuck or Mike "****" Dean to make themselves the centre of attention for the match - so of course they have to resort to extreme measures in order to prevent their fragile egos being overshadowed by a system introduced for this reason

    Case in point...

It's useful for decisions which are essentially factual and therefore impartial.
It adds another layer of confusion to those which are subjective and require officials to exercise judgement.

Yes, unlike cricket where the technology is used to establish the facts.
In football the technology can be a hindrance at times. Slow motion replays of tackles and handballs often give a skewed perspective. It can seem as if the offending player has had time to make a calculated decision. I don't see how those kind of decisions - where the intention of the player is the issue - are improved by referral to an off field official who spends time poring over TV images where the perspective can be very different depending on the angle of the footage, the speed it's viewed at etc.

Therefore my contention that this is of most benefit to the media to add more fake drama to their broadcasts at the expense in the long run of the game.

Exactly why it works so well in cricket and tennis but not so much football.

We have had the VAR in the A League for a few years now , its original remit was to correct a clear error by the ref or linesman. Whether a close offside or a penalty decision, later it was extended to check on foul play or behind the play incidents. In general it has worked, but the final of 17/18 season it failed to pick up a clear offside to Melbourne Victory against Newcastle Jets which led to the only goal of the game. If the PL follow a similar path it will be good for the game but if they go with the European version then its going to be a long frustrating season ahead.

    I’m still 50-50 on it.

I think the system can be successful but so far it’s made just as many debatable decisions as what we’d have without it and I don’t like that it can sometimes take between 45 seconds to a minute. With instant replays you should be able to make a call within 10 seconds.

It’s sort of a “must do better” grade from me.

Rugby does it really well sometimes within a minute of the request.

The discussions need to be broadcast, with slo-mo replays otherwise they will just help Michael o'Liver_pool disallow more goals against the mousers.

VAR has done it's job both times against City

They just need to suck it up

There will be days when we are at the receiving end but you can't grumble if it's calling a correct decision within the laws of the game...thems the rules

A brief history of Spurs and VAR

    1. A number of people try to point out via various data that the officiating unfairly favors the richest clubs and disfavors Spurs. The consensus reply: shut up, you conspiracy nuts.
    2. VAR begins. Spurs benefit time after time. The consensus reply: correct decisions are unfair to the richest clubs.

Perhaps this article should be renamed to "VAR watch" .

Have there been any other contentious VAR decisions in any of
the other PL games to date this season ??
