Any wrongs Britain was involved in in the past pales into insignificance compared to the wholesale mass slaughter on an industrial scale perpetrated by the Nazi German government. That is why your adopted country stands out in the murder league, only challenged latterly by Poll Pot or the Chinese under Mao.

This is relatively recent history and is one of the reasons the President of the United States is visiting the UK at this time. We should be honouring a head of state which helped our country in desperate times of need. You whinging liberals should remember that when deciding to snub one of the few dependable allies we actually have.

Our government is respecting.. As a public citizen we all have our civil liberties as enshrined in the un charter we are signed up to.. If we can't exercise our rights here, what chance those in totalitarian regimes world wide..??

You can exercise your rights but should stop and think. You need to make sure you have a sense of fairness taking into account all factors.

If you consider this to be relatively recent history, then it confirms my opinion that you are stuck in some time bubble. One can respect the position of a President, but be highly critical of the man holding that role on a temporary basis. This man took no part in any military operation, pleading bone spurs that mysteriously disappeared after he had dodged the draft. I take it that you would also wish to lay out the red carpet for a visit of Putin. The Russians tied up two thirds of the German army on the eastern front, so as much praise should be given to them. To try and extol a President who is interfering in UK domestic politics is a bit ridiculous when you are complaining so often that is what the EU does.

.. And we have a democratic position in the EU... With the US it will be a trade deal done behind closed doors.. I know which I prefer..

I have never condoned Trump's strange and crass behaviour, I just think it is polite to respect the President of the United States during a state visit. I would also say the same about any European leader.

Although I agree I find the amount of energy put into the protests rather depressing - all that spare time and all that money could have been put to so many better uses but it doesn't get you on telly so why bother I guess...

No, the leaders of her majesty's official opposition and the LibDems refusal to meet the President is childish and unstatesmanlike. I'm sure many of their supporters are extremely disappointed.

Strange that you choose to use the word childish. The US press have been pointing out that Trump has been displaying childlike behaviour in his attacks on people, and to deny saying things when there are tapes to prove he did. They point out his lack of statesmanship and seem to be a bit embarrassed having him represent the country.

Whether we like Trump or not he is the president of one of our greatest allies, if not our greatest ally and to not treat him with respect is to insult the people of the United States which surely P1$$ them off big time.

Yes he has some undesirable traits but he is prepared to be a leader, a successful businessman and negotiator, is not afraid to call it how he see's it, is prepared to stand up to bullies and if someone crosses the line in the sand, he does something about it.

Of course he will act in his countries best interests, as will we and if the USA best interests do not coincide with ours then we walk away, something Mr Trump would respect.
