As someone who doesn't hold a candle for Corbyn, I think he has led his party into as much of a blind alley as May has to her party. He is quite entitled to try and win a change of government, but to do that you have to take your party with you. He has failed to do that, with his membership being ignored as well as his MPs.
If you think back to when the negotiations began, May wanted them to be carried out in secret. This is not the way that the EU has ever worked. Within 24 hours I can look at their website, and find out what has been discussed across the whole EU. When you are operating across a whole range of countries, it has to be democratic to keep everyone informed as to what is happening. There is a huge difference between the EU and UK when it comes down to how democracy should work. The UK has no written down constitution that it has to abide by, so any government of the day can bend and twist to try and do what they wish. Therein I think lies one of the problems that many do not understand. The EU can set a request against the rules that all member countries agree to and come out with a statement, while the UK can make it up as they go along. All that has happened over the past two years is that some from the UK suggested that the EU tear up their rule book and give the UK more than any other country, but why should they.

 

OFH yes I'm getting a bit frustrated with Labour not taking the role of "Opposition" seriously. If they won an election I have no idea what they would try and do. And if you want to win an election you should put policies forward to the electorate, not just criticise the sitting government.

But at least we are getting to a point where something will happen and we can get on with life. I'm getting the feeling the pain of hard brexit is the way to go. Within a year lots would be in place and the world would change. But then I'm a supoporter of WTO and anti free trade. Look after the farmers of the world rather than look after large corporates seems a big prize in saving the planet. And 39 billion and weaker pound will soften that year of pain.

But I'm still in a sense enjoying these current soap opera days

 

I read an interesting piece a day or two ago, when Labour party members were asked who if Corbyn were not leader who would they prefer. The favourite by some margin was David Milliband, not his younger brother Ed. Clearly a centre type of politician straight out of the Blair fold. I do believe that people across the divide would actually love to get away from the right wing Rees-Mogg and left wing Corbyn types.

Much as I like many of Corbyn's ideas he is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He should be writing a book somewhere scratching his beard for ideas. The Tories have to either destroy themselves for generations through a hard Brexit or tear themselves apart through a soft or no Brexit - a real leader would know how to handle being leader of the opposition at the moment, but he is still dithering where he should be smelling blood. He has not cottoned on to the fact that the British people now want a second referendum, where they themselves have the power to correct the mistake they have made. Many in the Labour Party would have heard David Lammy's speech in the house and wished .......if only.

 

I don't like bringing sport into politics but as the Beeb already did it at the weekend - does anyone else feel a bit dirty about agreeing with anything Jamie Carragher has to say? On the other hand it's good to be in complete disagreement with Mr Warnock!

 

Well David Lammy certainly speaks with passion, and I applaud him for most of the things he had to say at the time of the Grenfell disaster. He speaks with common sense, but has as much success at getting an answer from the PM as everyone else. I don't think he has a high enough profile to actually be the leader. Corbyn has appealed to many with his offer to be led by the party membership, but now seems to be ignoring them. Tonight he is reported to have been addressing the PLP, and there was no passion from him at all. Just maybe like kc and me, age is catching up!

 

Maybe we could label the brexiteers as Colins?

Are you saying you are no longer hopeful of leaving at the end of March, or what? I would be really interested to know how you see this chaos resolving itself.

 

Oh I think we know why the no deal fans are so keen in it. If there's a deal they won't coin it in by hammering sterling or the stock market as they're hoping to. If the result goes in the PM's favour tomorrow your mod duties may include nappy changing....

 

There are somethings I will not do for the forum. Let those you refer to clean up their own mess.
