Sad to see this, but I know nothing about the state it's in. A legendary stadium and a must visit for me personally before it's demolished. SB, what's your take on this news?
It's old, and probably hardly been touched since the build-up to Italia 90....in which case it needs modernisation. Sadly, far to common a case these days, we only have to look at our own ground to see how limited such stadia become over time, especially for two giants such as the Milan teams. RIP San Siro
I was there a couple of years ago, as Steels says it really has been allowed to fall into disrepair like a lot of Italian stadia. I went to a game at Verona and the ground still had the Italia 90 logos all over it. Sad. The San Siro will always be close to my heart, the AC Milan team I watched there was beautiful, and the place rocked with 75,000 plus in it every week. Really great times, plus you could get stoned simply by sitting in the stadium and breathing in. But it was never a beautiful stadium, just like the Duomo in Milan, built to intimidate. I saw Milan v Sampdoria on a Friday night last time and even with 40,000 in it it felt empty. Juve set the trend a few years ago by recognising the fans don’t go any more, moving out of the huge council stadium built from scratch for Italia 90 with zero atmosphere, and building something much more modern, modest and intimate. Although I hate Inter I’m glad Milan and Inter will still ground share, that seems right, and I hope they build close to the current site. Some good bars around there. Get there before it goes Ben, aim for a big game - the derby would be epic. Actually, the last derby before the wrecking ball could be a required trip for me......at the very least I shall raise a glass of something and toast old friends and great memories.
Just read up on this. Planned 60,000 seater next to the current stadium but built below street level. San Siro in use until 2022/23 at least. Sound funky. One problem with the current stadium is that the stands are so tall and steep that the pitch gets no sunlight and has to be relaid multiple times every season.
My daughter has just introduced me to Bob Mortimer’s twitter feed. Absolutely priceless. He also sells cats names, very good value at £8 each.
A very sobering video, I hope none of us are ever unfortunate enough to be in anything like this simulation...
