In fairness re the Luftwaffe, defeat was in part self inflicted.
The newer Me 210 was designed with clear skies in mind, it was rubbish in air to air combat, allied fighters and the Russia later war fighters made tinfoil of them

I was given a primer for Fury, utter gash, a tank which cannot fight against infantry is meant to have taken on a few German companies with AT weapons n **** <laugh>

Good list though, Tuskegee was excellent
Private Ryan was nothing but a recruitment drive ;)
Escape to Victory, was that the one with Stallone as a keeper ? <laugh>

I've read all of his WWII books, even The Mystery of Olga Cheklova :D Great author, if you want a good overall kind of historical recount, if you want nitty gritty details, you have to go for other historians from the countries the wars were fought in.

It is a UK/German film directed by Sam Peckinpah. Made in 1997 it is not like modern films as there is no CGI to speak of. It is more than a war film as it shows the average German soldier, who like most soldiers do not really want to be there and are certainly not Nazis. Give it a go and see what you think.

Someone recommended Fury to me, it was rubbish. The tank could have easily been destroyed, but apparently German soldiers preferred not to use their anti-tank weapons against Brad Pitt and decided just to shoot bullets at his tank instead.

I watched a couple of Russian WW2 films long long time ago.

Cranes are flying and can't remember name of the other one.... focussed on a boy.

Both very good.

An interesting one is Barbarossa by Alan Clarke (of diaries fame) written in mid to late 60's very opiniated but also very detailed on military formations etc.
Probably overated by me as i found his views at that time interesting considering some of the views expressed in his diaries <laugh>
Stalin - The Court of the Red Tsar by Simon Seebag - Montefiore* is worth a read but that covers the whole period of his "reign"

I'm sure the Russians have a lot more set on the Eastern front than the Western front. It's natural that films out if UK and US would focus on the Western front because that tells the story from their perspective. Regardless of which was the more important front, a western audience will relate better to stories on the west and eastern audience to the story from the east.

WWII aside, I can't think of many western movies in general told from a Russian perspective. Those that are are usually based on old classic novels written by Russians.
 
Another Russian murdered by the state. Maxim Borodin dared to write an article about Russian "mercenaries" operating outside Russia. Fell off a building in Russia during a visit from state soldiers. Purely coincidence the soldiers were there I guess. Russia is treating this as a suicide.

I'm sure this was another case of the West faking Russia murdering their own native people though. :bandit:

you'd wonder how these guys can't just stick to the script and get ahead for themselves

why bother mouth off about russian mercenaries at all. what does it change? nothing.

I don't believe journalists are assasinated for telling stories embarrassing to the government. There would be few journalists left in the US if they got killed over here with Trump in charge.

Do I believe secret services might kill certain individuals harmful to the state? I'm sure it happens. I'm sure the odd foreigner (or native acting on behalf of foreign country) might befall an accident. All governments do despicable things in what they think are the best interests of their civilians. No country on Earth is clean. Some countries: Russia, Israel, North Korea etc, to name more high profile ones, probably do more "unethical" acts to "protect" their country or regime than others... But all countries are dirty.

It doesn't happen to journalists or political rivals like it frequently does in Russia though.

sorry misread, thought you were talking about why its front page news, not why the guy was investigating.

I guess maybe he thought it was his job... sure it doesn't change much but you can't fault the guy for being a real journalist. I wish our lot would do the same
