I find it quite depressing that we have sunk to the level of signing the likes of Matt Smith. The only upside I can see is that Washington might benefit from playing up alongside him.

He's got a lot to work on, no doubt, but for the price we paid I think he's a real handful for most defences in this division. I don't think he's fluent with the English language yet which could be an issue. I hope he's working on it!

I can understand this and Goss...completely....and all relatively cheap
I think we are desperate for a big striker, Smith is a desperation measure...but at 500,000 only rising to 1million after a few add ons...not sure what we could do. 20 goal strikers are very hard to get and do not come cheap.
I am hoping his simple presence will convert Conor into a 15 goal striker, then I don't care if he only scores occassionally

Just like a certain Sean Derry and Clint Hill. But then the intelligentsia that this this forum is (and was spectacularly wrong then) seems to believe we will have a strong passing game with the likes of Mackie, Washington, and Sylla. Put another way they live in fantasy land if they believe that footballers can be found for tuppence ha' penny. There are plenty of bargains to be had if the manager chooses well and can create a team from a collection of unimpressive parts. Warnock can and did. Holloway has done previously. I rate their chances better than the likes of better fancied Premier League managers.
So we go back to the start and build in accordance with a budget to suit our status in the league. Not much wrong with that in my book.

Quite possibly. But that's what you get without having a big target man. We now have one so give him a chance. Who knows we might actually get to see both Washington and Sylla play in their best positions feeding off Smith's knock downs. And by the way. Burton Albion are as good or as bad as we are. The sooner we wise up to the fact that we are not superior to other teams the better. Possibly we were once. Maybe 4 years ago
We're signing Smith from a better team and a better run club than ours. Don't see the problem.
Rumours (and SSN) say Brighton are about to make Glenn Murray a permanent signing for £3m - that's not bad for a 20+ goals a year striker even at 33 yrs old.
..and Fulham are willing to pay Derby £9m to make Chris Martin permanent (depending on all parties agreeing) - that's a lot of money in comparison but he is 6 yrs younger and scoring nearly 1 in 2 according to Wikipedia
Fact is there aren't many bargains out there thanks to Villa and Newcastle... we will have to work on building a fantastic team spirit and developing players in-house... imo it starts with the supporters giving the players a chance... no-one performs to their best while being barracked by their own fans.

Like it or like it not these are the type of players that we'll be signing for the foreseeable future
