We need at least three new first team starters signed up before the Wigan game next weekend. Our starting X1 as things stand basically picks itself, but in terms of squad depth we will be relying on serial crocks like Aneke & Terry Taylor, duds like Edun & Tennai, and kids such as the novice Jamaican lad & Tyreece Campbell. Scott Fraser is proving more difficult to shift than a bad case of the trots.
There’s no doubt about it - our summer transfer activity has well and truly stalled. Even the widely touted Begovic hasn’t been announced yet. IMO the reason for this is money - or lack of. Nathan Jones all but confirmed it after the Wimbledon defeat. Only the perennially obtuse Bexley Boy seriously believes that we have strengthened this summer, and have a squad capable of a promotion push. We only need a couple of injuries to key players and once again we will be looking down, not up, next season. Certain forum fans including BB of course, and Bamber Gascoigne- Mundell, who can’t be wrong, have been well and truly taken in by these hucksters. Where’s the investment in elite players ??
I was feeling very bullish at the start of the Summer but it has slowly drained away. The only way we will strengthen further is if we can offload the likes of Fraser, Edun etc. But surprise, surprise nobody wants them.
All we can do is judge Methven, Rodwell & Scott by their own words. Remember their 8-8-8 strategy ?? They have now had 2-4 transfer windows, if you include the car crash that was Jan ‘23. Where are the 8 elite players , or even close to that number ??
On so called “elite players”, there is a certain irony here. If you asked most Charlton fans six months ago who our “elite players” were, they would probably have replied “CBT, George Dobson, Alfie May”. Anyone know what happened to the three of them ?
You are correct. It was carefully crafted PR speak from this dud SMT, although it did dupe the intelligentsia on ITTV. I actually asked a question of Rodwell at a recent fans meeting (put to him by Charlotte) in which I detailed Scott’s track record at the club & questioned why he was still in post. “I think that’s very unfair” replied his mate.
Strange that it’s taking so long. The Begovic deal can’t be dependent on us selling Scott Fraser first Can’t Charlie Methven go to Metro Bank in Woolwich and take out a club overdraft ?
The lack of transfer activity in the last 3.5 weeks is absolutely pathetic, and doesn’t auger well for the season. Perhaps that 6’6 goalkeeper that the Global Moderator assured us was as Sparrows Lane got his head wedged in a door joist on the way to sign his contract ?
It looks like Begovic won’t be signing. We are looking at goalkeepers from the Championship on loan. I presume it is money as he was on good money at QPR.
Rumours today that we are resorting to our all time favourite transfer target again , A.Loan. Nathan Jones clearly said at the end of last season that he didn’t want loans, he couldn’t have been clearer.
This familiar line is trotted out every summer, conveniently at the same time as our transfer dealings dry up & whoever the owners are at the time run short of cash. It seems like the Begovic deal is dead (rumour), in which case we start the season with either AMB or the Cambridge No.2 keeper in goal. Strengthening ?
Methven has been quick with leaking the favourable tit bits this Summer (Dubai is quiet these days), so perhaps one of his 3-4 mouthpieces could explain why we look like starting the season without the new No.1 keeper Nathan Jones wanted ? That 6’6 keeper we were informed was as the training ground doesn’t appear to have signed ??
