Why does debate have to come at the cost of banter? Surely, the key thing is to get the balance right?
On the one hand, out-and-out personal abuse and foul-mouthed loutishness should be utterly eschewed, and perhaps constant banter, devoid of any footballing references, is something that, whilst not offensive in any strict sense, can become trying. However, surely any reasonably-minded and intelligent poster enjoys a good discussion that is mixed in with a healthy slice of banter? After all, Man cannot live on bread and water alone.
The problem with a certain type of poster (and we all know who they are), is that they attempt to drag every discussion down to the level of base tribalism, even to the point where there is no attempt to engage in any form of discussion, and the incursion into every thread is made with the intent simply to leave abusive comments to deride and belittle the intended target. I really cannot imagine that any decent person (which ever team or sport they may support) can find that kind of behaviour in the least bit entertaining or fulfilling.
Maybe I have drunk too much Relentless, but you just accurately described the number 1 problem with Not606 and football forums in general.
