Charity work is good, I know he does lots so fair play to him.

But Captain?? Come on Jimmy the guy is lawless and has the complete wrong attitude to be a captain.

You can't be captain and just turn up late to training, airports, interviews etc.

You can't storm out of a stadium for not being picked.

These things are so important, a captain HAS to lead by example.

I agree we don't have many candidates at present. I see Henderson continuing this season, then possibly Can taking the reigns. But it's odd as I'm not even sure Hendo is a guaranteed starter?

Maybe one of our new guys really shows up this season and ends up captain next season. Wijnaldem was a club captain as a teenager, so he must have something about him behind the scenes?

Was he not captain at PSG

I still want him as a captain - mainly because he's the best of A bad bunch. He does organise the defence but he can only do so much with the dross around him.

People question his attitude etc - but off the field, he clearly loves Liverpool and has totally bought into the club. His work with charities is very good as well.
All of this is perfectly true, yet a captain needs more than this. He needs not only to be an organiser, but also be level-headed and responsible.
I know you dislike Hendo and Milner, but these are the qualities that make managers give the armband to players like that.

I thought that when we signed him he was being built up on here as a potential leader?
He'll need to get his finger out to live up to that expectation because at the moment he comes across as being rather immature and irresponsible.

He was built as a leader when he arrived because he'd captained a poor PSG team (before they had mega money and we're languishing in the lower depths of the French league) in his earlier years.

Leaders come in different ways but I've not seen any suggestion of an organiser whilst he's been with us (anyone can do the odd shout when not happy) and I can't see him being a leader by example either.

Getting caught up in a drug dilemma (no matter the reasoning) or getting sent home from a tour for breaking club rules suggest he's not cut out to be a captain either.

However, I do agree with Jimmy that we seriously lack leaders too.

See my last comment ^^^^
That would involve reading, though......

I thought I'd read that he was made captain at PSG as a sort of political move because a number of the senior players were getting too big for their silly boots.
I don't know how long it lasted.
However, I'm not really bothered about the past, I'm going on what I see at our club and so far I see a distinct lack of the qualities required to be a leader.

No idea how it came about. Just know he was their captain but before they were good.

I do agree with you - I wouldn't have Henderson as a captain because he's a bottler.

I really hope we groom Can for captainancy. <ok>

Or a Souness
Souness <yikes>

great player but his discipline left a little to be desired <whistle>

still remember him at wembley on the ground with an opposition player . As the ball was swept forward Souness suddenly dragged the rising oppo player back to the ground a promptly punched him. Even back then commentators referred to his "ferocious" tackling on occasion which appeared to be code for "christ how did he not cause a serious injury with that outrageous tackle"
Possibly not the best example without even considering his Rangers sojourn

I love that commitment in a captain. Gerrard and Carra had it, Suarez too. Mascherano was another although he never captained us I don't think.

You don't need the captain / leader to step up when winning. You need them when the ****s hit the fan.

How many times did he get sent off for us though.. 359 odd games, how many reds

I wish I was around to see Souness in the flesh - watched countless videos etc and he is probably my favourite LFC player from that era.

He is the exact type of midfielder we need right now.

Players like him don't come around very often probably only 1 or 2 a generation and seriously he would have to greatly restrain himself to play in this day and age.Even back then he had rep as a hard/dangerous player
