Looked at another way, 4 players for 2 places isn't really over-stuffed - especially as Matip, Gomez, and Lovren himself are all rather injury prone, so I wouldn't be happy to let Lovren go without a decent replacement. If he wants to go because of restricted game-time then that's his choice.
I wouldn't want us to be paying big money (by today's standards) for someone unless he walks into the first team, and currently I'm happy with the combination of Virgil and Gomez or Matip. Lovren is, for me, a decent enough back-up.

Pedantic, probably but I thought I'd overlooked another CB. Given what saint has said as well, I wouldn't be happy to lose Lovren (even though I probably was this time last year).
