Yeah, very misguided to pose for the photo, but the fuss made out of it is OTT, Putin for example is as much of a despot as the Chechen leader and many countries have despotic leaders that are afforded the red carpet treatment by the British government(as well as others)without as much fuss.
As the saying goes "sport and politics don't mix" but sometimes it's difficult to keep the two apart.

Exactly, it's not his duty to deal with these matters, it's why we have National Team FAs.

A despotic leader only becomes a problem when he out lives his usefulness.
