Well, as I said above, I don't think who is made captain makes a lot of difference. Swapping Hendo and Gerrard would be swapping one player for a better player... Certainly Henderson had the higher quality team mates and manager. That said, I don't think we would be guaranteed to win the same cups if we had Gerrard. Gerrard is the better player, yes, but he was also a more self-driven player and less of a team player, he wasn't as defensively-minded (although he certainly could defend), etc. I'm not saying Hendo is as good as Gerrard, but if we had Gerrard instead of Henderson we might have been lacking defensively as Gerrard wouldn't have played in exactly the same position, and almost certainly wouldn't have been as willing to let Salah AND Mane AND Firm all take glory ahead of him.
But you cannot do that. You cannot take simple 2005/2006 gerrard out of LFC and drop in prime henderson and expect the same game. It'd be like asking to take prime messi out of barca and drop in modric both might be world players of the year but their roles and skills as ballers is completely different. You can't equate leadership with skills and assists To be quite frank 2005 was quite a fluke. Djimi traore was LB. Risse was LM. Hammnan was finihsing. Kewell was off his death bed. Rafa surrounded gerrard with alonso, mascherano, torres and kuyt to all exploit gerrard stills while other shut the back door. Klopp's actually won more with henderson surrounded by players than rafa could as rafa never completed the squad not the first 11. He ran gerrard into the ground. Of course henderson raises the standards.... OR HAD RAISED THE STANDARDS.( he's now not capable of doing the same and is a 30min sub for me.) So did mane in his own way of working, so did salah, they are/were great examples to Trent, elliott et al coming in. the baton must be passed on now... and that's really the point. Irrespective of what Henderson did or didn't do from 2012 to 2022 its a case of thanks but what have you done lately, and the baton must be passed on, everyone gets older as footballers and cant keep doing it. Its now time (and probably was last season ) to have the replacement ready to go and Henderson step back into the milner role. there's still value in henderson in that 30min sub on to close out games, but not with fabinho as well, neither can do the work and therefore then thaigo can't as well. I'm sure we can all agree like or loathe LFC's great captain his time is past.
I think klopp would have changed the system if he had a prime gerrard. 433 with false 9 might have become something a little different to enable gerrards runs into box and drive and passing. but then theres examples of trent passing like gerrard and henderosn making assists like him too. Maybe gerrard would prevent trent for emerging as much. who knows. The think is 7 trophies later, klopp's team needs a refresh and prime steven gerrard isn't coming. it;ll be someone new. League. CL, Fa cup, League cup, super cup, world club., (finals of CL, twice, Europa league and league cup and 2 second places in league by 1 point) its been a great ride with henderson as captain. now we need to look to the next chapter.
One of Gerrard's attributes that we are sorely lacking atm is shooting ability from outside the box. Gakpo has that but he's warming up very slowly. Once he comes to the boil, watch out.
could just as easily say it was Gerrards leadership which cost us the title in 13-14 when Henderson in the 2nd half of that season had become vital to the team .
yeah that lack of long range (successful) shots is very noticeable though Nunez in his brief spell with us has had quite a few goes .
the lack of chances has the two lads desperate to impress and trying silly stuff. when it's on we are very poor at hitting the target. we blaze nearly everything high or scuff is 6 yards wide. that's everyone. our go to is work it about and cross if we can't get a break away. he don't really see a huge amount of Harvey Elliott style shots cos half the time our lads want rid of the ball rather than threaten sides.
I actually think Thiago and Fabinho also have the ability - remember that Thiago stinger - but they don't shoot often enough. Fabinho also is a good free kick taker as evidenced at Monaco. Trent must be amazing in training.
We did that when it was Salah, Mane and Bobby. We just created that many chances that it didn't matter that we missed a lot
we rarely score from free kicks. I’d love to know that we had a chance from 30 yards out but reality is, we rarely score directly.
Sorry jimmy that’s a daft argument Where was Gerrards captains in his last season/game That’s not what has been said you will never accept Hendo has been crucial And I not trying to force you It’s your opinion and you more than entitled to it mine is that Hendo has been crucial to us Now he is closer to the end He doesn’t have the legs to do what has made him crucial at the moment I personally am hoping it is because he was flogged last season and has gotten old and that maybe after a rest he can still have another season But we shall see
thats not too bad. I mean lets face it, suffered is a relative term. Yes two bad injuries with us is really tough mentally i'm sure but. Massive signing on and wage at LFC for refusing to sign up with burnely 75k a week wage Massive signing on fee at southampton. 125k a week no less. massive signing on fee at villa. was on 120k a week here now massive signing on fee at west ham. rumours that he's on Now, if i could suffer like he has I'd be delighted. he is only 30. 2 major transfers and paymenrs and bonues all over there. The man is set for life.
Well obviously the 'suffered' was to be taken in context. He seems like a good character and while he may be well paid, his career could have been so much more.
oh yeah, he does seem an alright lad who causes no hassle and looks a hard worker. I don't know if his career could have been or not given the position and clubs involved but he could have a few more caps. Realistically he could have displaced origi from our squad and thats about it. overall he should have no regrets and enjoy the retirement when it does come though. Injury is injury and nothing can be done so he shouldn't regret that happening as its out of his control.
Danjuma has Everton medical, does all the media, refuses to sign the registration papers and is now on his way to Spurs for a medical. Bielsa says Everton players are too slow for his system to work and he isn't interested unless they sign some quicker players. Newcastle put in £25m bid for Gordon (with add ons). Everton turned down £60m for him in summer.
Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is desperate to back manager Graham Potter after a horrendous start to the season, which sees the club 10th in the Premier League. How they've managed to spend so much is down to the spread of the payments. Mudryk, for example, signed the longest contract in English football history when he put pen to paper on an eight-and-a-half-year deal. That means his £80 million fee will be calculated at £ 9.41 million by UEFA's FFP calculations. That will change in the coming months, according to the Times. European football's governing body will roll out a five-year maximum time limit for a transfer fee to be paid. The new policy is set to be introduced before the summer transfer window. FIFA regulations state that contracts should be a maximum of five years unless a country's law says they can be longer. Currently, there are no restrictions in the United Kingdom. Chelsea will not be prevented from spreading the cost of payments for players they've already signed. This will cause Chelsea a problem in the summer
