Can you please define real connection? What does a fan have to be or do in order to be connected to a club?

My connection is coming from three previous generations of Reds fans. And, unfortunately, four generations of Blueshites too. :emoticon-0108-speec

I dunno. I think being part of it is just prozac/citalopram depressing, while being out of it is nearer to lithium or valium.

good question. What defines a real connection or a real fan. I’m connected to Liverpool through my old man and his family, who have long moved out of the City (to Preston). I grew up abroad - and only watched Liverpool at Anfield when we came home to visit family, usually around Christmas time or the end of summer…..so I did watch them live in the golden years a few times and I try to get up for a couple of games a season at least. But I am, by no means a regular match going fan - but I do consider myself ‘connected’ to the club and a huge fan, despite geography.

Ok, I will say that I have nothing against "plastics" as such, I don't mind who chooses to follow our club - but I don't really understand it.
Liverpool just happened to be one of my local teams as a sprog so it's natural that I would follow them (or the other lot). I get that some non-locals have family or historic connections too, but I really have no idea why people in the far east or whatever feel strongly about European clubs. I can understand that if they have poorer leagues they might watch the high-profile leagues, but I'm not sure why they'd get passionate about them.

However, like I said - I'm ok with that even if I don't really get it. But the people that run football and the TV companies are exploiting that market without any regard for the effect it has on the game. It's become a global commodity to be actively sold to as many people as possible.
I'm reminded of when Channel 4 hammered us into submission with US sports in the 80's. I have no interest in watching American Football or baseball teams or whatever, but it worked with some people.

Don't misunderstand me, big money has brought some good things to the game, we get to see some of the world's best players in our league, but there are bad things as well.
When we were dominant in the 70s and 80's teams like Forest or Ipswich could compete with us - now only the richest clubs have a chance, and a money-based elite is impenetrable.
Money has always given advantages to clubs, and the PL has at least tried to give some help to lower clubs with the TV money, but the disparity is just too extreme.
Having more clubs brought up to the level of the super-rich doesn't solve the problem - I'd rather some effective measures to hold them back were implemented. However, it doesn't seem possible - which is why it's depressing.

Not getting into the whole plastics debate again as it detailed in these pages over and over.

I get emotional about 5 teams
Liverpool - my team as far as I am concerned
    Wyre Diamonds
    Wyre Whites
    Fleetwood Tigers
Fleetwood Wolves - the 3 teams I coach or manage and the other my daughter plays for too

any of those lose and it ruins my day
I believe money has ruined the upper ends of game totally
It’s clearly corrupt and it’s clearly all about who has most money

but at the end of the day I have the ability to just not pay any attention to it

since I have lost the ability to watch the games I think it would be easier to walk away but with Liverpool- I will always want to know the results

even if we went into the ESL I think I would have continued to try to listen as much possible.

where as back in the 80s for varying reasons I picked the Rams as my AF team but it doesn't have any real impact on my life emotionally.

but I think everyone is different

I just like sport and it is better if there is a team I am rooting for :)

I have got this far down and I have no idea what my point was

but I will be damned if I think I am going to delete it lmao

Only the person talking about a 'real connection' can define what they mean when using that description. For each one there will likely be a different definition, especially when some people think they have a real connection to someone because they follow them on Twitter. :bandit:

This is impossible to answer as every fan on one side or the other has a different opinion.

There is a minority across the country of match going fans that believe firmly that and only they are real fans and have a bad attitude to anyone of any ilk that even dares have an opinion.

Theres then the usual stuff about out of towners

Then theres the day trippers comments that get tied up with selfie sticks and two colour scars and all of that. (Tourists)

Then theres the plastic comments about glory hunters. The types that shout you've never been to a game etc.

Then theres the foreign fan bashers.

In general it's impossible to know what type of person you might to conversing with on the internet and what their opinion stems from.

In general it's hardly inclusive anyway. Esp the hard nosed types who believe their Male only booze up on the weekend at the footy is their and theirs alone and they should not ever be inconvenienced by anyone.

Southampton enquired about Nat Phillips last month. The 24-year-old has remained under consideration but it’s thought Southampton aren’t actively pursuing him — although if he became available on loan, then it could be worth another conversation.

However, Liverpool are adamant they will only consider permanent offers for Phillips

southampton owners or club must be Stoney broke. They sold off ings and vestergaard and rumours are ward prowse is on the block next.

Brighton already have their CBs so it is purely down to a nice to have to buy another.

Southampton are cheeky as sin looking for a loan. they are headed for the big drop if that's their attitude now.

Hope he stays, tbh. He can do the same job Klavan did. Let's face it. class as Matip is (and he is), he'll be out again after a few games. It is what it is.
