I think it's just daft business sense from us. We left it too late, played hardball again with a decent player whilst the turds at the club are on staggering wages for their limited ability. You can see why Can is a bit peeved off and thinks he warrants a higher wage!

Now the situation surely has to be saying, look Emre, you want out, fine you can leave, but lets get a bit of cash in for you as well. 20-30mill is peanuts in today's game, but it's something we can put towards a replacement. If that means we give him 150k a week until the summer, so be it. It's a damn sight better than getting nothing! Worst case scenario there being no one will want to up his wages and he'll stick around on 150 a week, which is probably about what he's worth anyway.

I agree. I love Can but he’s easily replaceable (with some good scouting!).

It’s a damning indictment on our recruitment policy though when the owners clearly want us to invest in young cheap talent, develop them and sell for high profit. Letting Can leave for free is criminal.

he should have been moved.on last season if not signing

West Ham were rejected by Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto Mancini and Rafael Benitez before making their move for David Moyes to replace manager Slaven Bilic.
The Hammers are in discussions about bringing in former left-back Stuart Pearce as Moyes' assistant. (Telegraph

He should have signed a contract!

The Coutinho saga will send alarm bells ringing for players - they will want a release clause.

Should have if we bent over backwards but if no agreement there is no agreement.

But realistically very very few players in england have them. they are forced by law to have them in spain.

IF a player comes to england they know what they are getting.

AND the coutinho saga is a question simply of you were asked in may.... if you'd said i'm off them you'd be gone mate.

he wants 160k with 20mil release clause. Its not even the wage....

we could have sold last summer but said **** it a 10mil player in the squad is no real loss. if you are interested in profit only then you are not trying to acheive on pitch. klopp kept him to play.

i think we are all focused on making a return somehow on a leaving player rather than seeing that klopp said fine. I want you this season. I need Emre for the season to acheive something.

Agreed. He cost £10m to sign. Selling him last summer would have seen a similar return.

Maybe it would have been different had we got Keita for this season?

Whats in it for Can signing one now and getting a 70k increase for 6 months and not knowing if another club will want to pay the £30m for him.

For him, he can wait till jan / end of season, and might get offered 150k from next year from another club with a huge signing on bonus. If he doesn’t, he can sign a new contract here.

From his point of view, can’t blame the guy for stalling

The value of the player isn't what we signed him for, it's what he's worth in today's market. If he was on a 5 year deal, he'd be going for upwards of 30million comfortably - I wouldn't want to give a more exact figure as who knows what's going on with market values, not certainly not 10million.

If Klopp actually wanted him, the contract offered to him by our management should have reflected that. Apparently our offer was insulting which I can imagine it was.
If Klopp didn't want him, the contract offered to him should have been so that we would at least sell for something rather than lose him on a free (see my final part about basically bullshitting him and telling him what he wanted).

It's not about only being interested in profits, it's about making the most of a situation and maximizing income to re-invest in the squad.

And if that's what Klopp wants because he missed out on his first choice midfielders, we should have bullshitted Emre and signed him on anyway so as to not loose a talented player for free. Football is still a business for those who own the club and we now have less to invest come the summer. To fans it's not a business, but ultimately we lose out when it comes to future transfers.

You're right, and that's a fair point to make - but that's where maybe our owners aren't ruthless enough. Bullshit him, tell him what he wants to hear and sign him on then sell him. As far as I know, originally he wanted his earnings to match others at the club (fair request) and to know he was important in the squad, not just a rotation player. That then moved into a release clause and increased wages incase another team came in and would make him first pick. We just look like we've ****ed it up at every step.

Can holds all of the aces.

He's asking say 100k more per week for the next 30 odd weeks. So £3m. Plus any signing on fee and probably a loyalty payment. All of which mean jack **** in the summer when Juve rock up and offer £20m.

Or if they don't, we stick with an overpaid player who isn't happy.

He's not good enough to earn £160k. If he gets it, there'll be a few in the queue behind him.

Make him a sensible offer that reflects his value to the club BUT within reason. If he rejects, as he has done, so be it. £160k/week buys you more than Can imo. In short, I agree now with the clubs stance.

imo we are far too hung up on making a few quid off him when in fact coutinho.will.bring in all the cash we can spend.

The horse bolted 18 months ago. He should have been gone then if not signing

Meh. Can't be arsed with all this player power business. Tail wagging the dog as far as I'm concerned. If he doesn't want to play for us then he can toddle off.

my view is he's playing ok... once played where he wants to play so if Klopp is happy im happy. his goal v watford got us cl.so.paid his 10mil fee... so its not like we are losing out that much. germand are far more mature about these things than we in this country are imo.

Completely agree with the meh <ok>

I'd be concerned if he was a top player, he isn't.

Maybe not a top player but certainly level of not better and with more potential than Hendo. And those are the only two players we have that will sit in the middle of midfield.
