Hitting a team on the counter in a game doesn't mean that your team intentionally sets up to play as a counter-attacking side. Also how many of those counter-attacks were in the same game? We scored the least goals out of the top 4 sides and part of it is due to a lack of clinical finishing but also because we struggled to break teams down with our intricate (yet laboured) build-up play as we used to have a higher % of the ball. For most of our games, apart from facing Bayern or City who have better ball retention skills than us, we generally tried to monopolise possession and create openings by camping in the opposition half, rather than defend deep and then hit teams on the counter when they overcommitted men forward. I'm fairly sure we conceded a lot of shots from counter-attacks too.
Lets not knock Vardy down before hes even kicked a ball for us.
If he does join us he is coming off the back of a great season where he scored for fun from all angles.
He is very quick and accurate and I don't think that his scoring skills will suddenly dry up because he comes to Arsenal.
Who knows, he might be just what we need.

I think Vardy is a very good signing.
Still think we need World Class CF though.
Besides there's strong rumours Walcott will be sold this window (possibly the Ox too). Which would make Vardy Walcotts replacement and would still leave room for another forward.

I, like the rest of you are mighty shocked about the whole Vardy transfer "gossip". It came out of left field for me, not someone I had on my shopping list. Like others have said, at 29 is it worth the 20 million risk??? For me, NO... and certainly not at the expense of some emerging world beating talent (21 - 25 yr old) that may be available from another source. BUT I think he's bringing in Vardy to counter the potential sale of OXO and the injury to Welb's AND Im hoping another striker is still on his wish list.

Actually you're wrong. Between 1998 - 2008 Philips scored 20+ in 5 of those seasons and scored 30 or more in 2 of them. Bent also had three 20+ seasons in close succession.
It remains to be seen whether Vardy can recreate his goal scoring record at Arsenal, but why not ? He's done it against nearly every PL club, so with even better supply what's to say he can't go on and score even more if he joins us ?

It's all superfluous anyway. There is genuinely no vindication for either of those players ever being able to excel with us. We will never actually find out, but it seems to me like you're arguing for the sake of arguing.
I'm not saying he can't. But I feel (rightfully) that there are better options out there who can strengthen us in that department that are younger and will suit our style of play better. His previous tally in the Prem was 5, so last season could easily have been a fluke.
If we do get him, and looking at the most recent reports it doesn't seem to be nailed on like some posters here seem to think, of course I want him to do well and succeed for us. But I don't think he's worth the fee + wages if he's the only attacking player we're going to get.

I still feel we missed a massive trick by not signing Higuain in 2013. He would have complemented us extremely well, in my view.

Seems to me that you're arguing for the sake of arguing, because both Bent and Philips weren't 'one season wonders' and scored 20+ and in Philips' case 30+ on more than one occasion, so you were wrong about that.
As for Vardy, I agree it's a risky signing. But at £20m these days it isn't a huge amount of money and he's proven that he can be prolific in the premier league. As I've said before, I think he's an unfashionable signing. If it were a foreign player who'd just scored 29 in his respective league, then I think people would be falling over themselves for us to sign him. Where I do agree with you though is that I hope Vardy isn't the only attacking player we buy. Ultimately I'd like to see Vardy as a replacement for Walcott, for when we need to play a counter attacking game.

What relevance does scoring 20 or 30 goals in the Championship have when talking about how they'd fit in at Arsenal, which was the point I was making? Fact of the matter is they were one season wonders in the Premiership and their records when playing in the Premiership prove this. By the way, if you are going to correct me on something, make sure you're 100% certain. What you said about Bent scoring 20+ goals for three league seasons in close succession was completely wrong. But you're right. You're totally not arguing for the sake of arguing...
He has proven it over one season. Like Leicester winning the league, it could have easily been a freakish season. He's never hit those heights before in his entire career outside of non-league, so what makes you so certain he can do it again? His previous goal tallies for Leicester were 5 and 16 (in the Championship). He's not a reliable goalscorer at all. Even his shot conversion rate isn't all that impressive.
I've already explained to you why I don't think this is right, so you repeating it is completely pointless.

You started out by saying that they were one season wonders, and I pointed out that you were wrong. So you've changed the parameters to suit your argument and yet Bent scored 20+ on more than one occasion in the PL so you are still wrong. So drop the patronising tone about only correcting you if I am 100% certain. The point is that neither were 'one season wonders'.
Whether they would have made it at Arsenal is academic, but the point is that they were both fairly unfashionable players, yet banged in the goals wherever they went.
As for Vardy, I've already said, it's a risky signing but given the supply he'll get at Arsenal, I think it could be a good one. In all honesty he'd have to have a bit of a mare not to score loads given how many chances we create.

In fairness, and with no wish to disparage Leicester, a "significantly higher wage" wouldn't be that hard for us to do. We could probably double his money and he'd still be on less than Walcott

I believe he signed a new contract in Feb and it was reported to be something like 80k, which is huge for a team a smaller team who were facing relegation the season before. Just shows how well they did last season and how much money they've earned from their performances!
Really?! Obviously we never know 100% the minutae of players contracts but I'd be surprised if we went over £120k a week. Mind you, if he turns out to be amazing it's money well spent. If he turns out to be sh*te then he's just one of many among our high paid "performers".
In the top flight? Again, name those seasons. In fact, name the seasons he scored just 20 top flight goals.
I agree, I'm hoping it's around the £100k mark and if we are replacing Theo with him then it won't cost us anything additional in wages... £120k would be ridiculous, but as you say no one really knows the exact details of players wages...
