While I accept your argument I think it would be wrong to ignore emerging talent, not even clubs like Real Madrid do that. We have to look at the next big thing players too.
Looking for the next big thing players is a dangerous game to play, IMO. Football is riddled with marketing and PR money that goes into building player reputations. It's part of an agents job to increase the value of their players, just like it is for a car salesman to get the best price for any car they are selling. We've seen it reach ridiculous levels with average players being hailed as the next big thing. The likes of Deli Alli and Mason Mount spring to mind... Jadon Sancho.. I could go on. I would even put the likes of Bellingham and Foden in there. It's especially dangerous with players without PL experience.
IMO there are very very few players that a clearly going to be superstars. I mean VERY few. At this time in football across Europe , maybe 1 or 2.
I am convinced, by the way, that pundits on TV and in the media are also in on the marketing and PR, paid to give glowing reviews of players.
I have seen too many average performances (and even bad ones) hailed as masterclasses to not seriously question the integrity of many of the pundits and reporters opinions.
Gordon is a guy with 28 goals and 26 assists in 171 PL games.
Martinelli has 41 PL goals in less time on the pitch and 23 assists - and some think he is not good enough.
There is of course more to wide play than goals and assists, but Martinelli also way clear of Gordon in defensive work and energy to continue pressing.
Trossard has 51 goals and 41 assists in only about 25% more PL minutes than Gordon.
Note the increase in hype after Gordon banged in multiple goals against an awful team in Europe. This is what agents leverage, looking for the next big move and pay day.
£75m is a joke. If we are considering Gordon it would be as a back up to potentially replace an aging Trossard - and £25m would be the maximum we should pay.
I rather suspect the story about Gordon is agent planted to take advantage of the goals scored against Qarabag (or whoever it was).
