Bristol City looking at Wolves Striker Liam McAlinden
Promising young Wolves striker Liam McAllinden has emerged as a potential target for Bristol City.
Robins boss Steve Cotterill has drawn up a wish list of possible signings to bolster his attack and 20-year-old McAllinden is one of several currently under consideration.
It remains to be seen whether City’s manager is planning to add further strike power to his existing squad or if he is merely identifying possible targets as a precautionary measure in the event that top-scorer Sam Baldock is sold during this transfer window.
Championship club Brighton & Hove Albion have already had an undisclosed bid for Baldock rejected out of hand and, although they have yet to come back in with an improved offer and City claim they are not interested in cashing in on their captain, he only has a year to run on his contract and his future remains uncertain for now.
Currently in South Africa with City’s first team squad, Cotterill will prioritise the recruitment of an experienced goalkeeper when he returns to Bristol later this month.
But he is also keen to further strengthen other areas of the team and, having previously stated his preference for working with four strikers, could yet move to provide assistance and competition for Baldock, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Aaron Wilbraham.
So far, City have not formalised their interest in Republic of Ireland Under-21 international McAllinden and there has been no contact between the two clubs. But that could change after Cotterill and his players return from Botswana on Saturday week.
Born in Cannock in the West Midlands, McAllinden signed his first professional contract with Wolves in 2010 and made his senior debut in a 2-1 Championship defeat to Burnley in April 2013.
He scored his first goal in a Football League Trophy tie against Walsall later that same year and netted his maiden Football League goal in a 1-0 win over MK Dons in Marsh, helping Wanderers lift the League One title and return to the second tier at the first time of asking.
Unable to break into the first team squad at Molineux, McAllinden was loaned out to Shrewsbury Town where he registered three goals in nine appearances between October and December last year.
Although he does not figure in Wolves manager Kenny Jackett’s immediate plans, he is contracted until 2016 and City will have to pay a fee should they decide to follow up their initial interest.
Undertaking the first ohase in an extended rebuilding programme, Cotterill has already made six new signings during the close season, recruiting midfielders Korey Smith and Wade Elliott, winger Luke Freeman, striker Wilbraham and defenders Mark Little and Luke Ayling.
And there will be more to come before the Robins launch their League One campaign with a Sky-televised contest against League One promotion favourites Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday, August 9.
He remains in the market for a keeper to provide competition for Frankie Fielding and Cardiff stopper Simon Moore, who spent a successful spell on loan at Ashton Gate during the second half of last season, is a target.
