Don't understand the "value for money" point in team selection. It doesn't matter what they are on - they are bloody on it end of. The whole question is whether they are as good/better than those playing regularly, and not being selected because they are not "value for money" reasons. Because someone less expensive, they are often seen as better value. From what I've seen over the years is that sounds very much like a Pearson argument.
classic chicken and egg................. they are not PI## poor, but NP has a rigidity that means should you play well you are in the top 18 or so, "best 11" plays from the whistle... do good in training get to subs bench and injuries on the day means your position has been subbed so lose out etc. So you dont get to play. On bench and a player out with an injury comes back, you lose the subs bench so minutes get rarer.!. to be fair KP has had a couple opportunities and did very well , and well ! but didnt get to stay in squad! Wells never been played where most effective .. in a U23 played in his position and wham wham wham thankyou mam .. wages were part of the " new era" get quality and have pay to for it... covid back fired that stratedgy ... changing manager/s also didnt help.... be fair NP's first few games were like a fish out of water playing 4 - 4- 1- 1 and then something else then something else it was gut wrenching to watch.. Now we are hopefully settling down.. maybe a solid core of 7 .. but to to get rid of for 4 replacements ... does he give KP a couple games .. " show me how good you are" . NP does not want to strengthen teams around us well next season we could be playing 5 or 6 teams with ex city players all striving to rob us of points and allowed to go for peanuts ... Patto free now attracting bids of £? for instance...
Personally it seems neither are NP’s type of player, tbf when played neither has grabbed the shirt. I like play well and affect the game, keep the shirt, regardless of name, cost or squad status, it encourages those with the shirt to keep up levels whilst encourages those without to keep pushing.
last time he did something similar .. might have got on the bench a few minutes game time ... seems he needs to score 6 or 8 then get more bench time!
Whether you agree with them or not, the reason for parachute payments are well known - but that's not the point I was trying to make. We have another able keeper in Dillon Phillips on less than a third of Smithies' wages, but we don't expect Smithies to play "3 times" better than him to justify his place in the side on the basis of cost. Whatever the contract wages of players are at any point in time should have no influence on selection - they don't have to justify those wages by being proportionately better - just better.
