Is there still a place for a player like Johnson/Lineker in the PL?

I don't know. Now the game is about all action players. Most forwards are expected to press, like a defender and work back, like a midfielder.

Can you just be great at finishing, if you're not going to do the hard yards, can't hold the ball up and aren't blessed with searing pace? I guess that we will find out...but I can't help but think Johson would do his best work for a team that relies on playing a low block and can afford a player who isn't required to flog himself half to death in a high press.

I don't think that's us, so something may have to give...especially if we recruit Savinho and have top options out wide.

Haaland is a good example of “doing nothing but scoring” He’s the very best at it.

Scoring is the hardest job in football. If “that’s all” Brenaldo does then that’s fine by me.

There's certainly a place for Lineker-like strikers, given the numbers they put up

Robert Lewandowski is probably the best example of this, as he's never really had the legs to effectively press for an entire game, but he's so lethal in the area that dropping him would be a fool's errand

A comparison between Lineker and Johnson , I remember at the time the moaning was that Lineker did nothing for the team except score goals could be said the same for Johnson

What else do you ask of a striker by position,
who is consistently scoring most of the
opportunities presented to them ??

On that basis, is Johnson actually a striker by position or not ??

Interesting to see the differing opinions on Johnson's performance yesterday.
I thought that he was largely ineffective, barring the goal, but that it wasn't his fault.
Starting two right-footers on the left meant that we were rather predictable down that side.
Pairing that with Walker's recovery pace made it pretty difficult to be effective.

I also found it a little odd that we went from two right-wingers starting to two left-wingers.
I was very happy to see Tel get on the pitch and get a great reception, though.
**** anyone abusing him online and anyone else too, for that matter. ****ers.

Gray's struggling with various aspects of his game at the moment.
Great to see him start in the Premier League and come away with a win, though.
The midfield had a rough spell after we scored the opener, but they weathered it.
A better opposition may have punished the rotation.

You're probably right, but 'an eye for a goal' which Johnson undeniably possesses has to be of value to any team.
May mean that the lad has to adapt his game and reinvent himself. Too soon to discard though.

He was certainly struggling to be involved in that first half, but noticeably improved in the second. Didn't notice that we changed much else so could just be he just took time to settle in.
I've desperately tried to put all thoughts of last year's PL debacle out of my mind, but I recall him having his best games as a stand-in CB rather than at FB or in his very few MF outings.

I'm not advocating selling him now, but I think that he's going to have to add some 'hustle' to his undoubted talent of putting the ball in the net. If he's to be a fixture/go to option in a team in the CL knockout phase, he has to adapt. I hope that he has it in him...

...we shall see.

Johnson was definitely creating half chances as a trad winger

Bergvall's chance in the first minute came from a Johnson cross, and Richy should've buried the chance Bren squared for him early in the second half

Burnley must ****ing hate visiting our ground.
Get beaten, often severely and concede a wonder goal.
Son from his own box, Porro out of nowhere or Richarlison remembering he's Brazilian.
Even when they took the lead they got hit by a van de Ven beauty, lost and got relegated.
