I’d assumed that the PL was a closed shop for the top teams to win year after year, but here we are in Feb with Leicester still number 1 and along with that, giving all of us the chance to believe that it’s possible again.
Never has there been a better chance for one of the underdogs to snatch a Premier League title. (Perhaps since Norwich flirted with top spot in the 90’s). Both Manchester sides in transition and Chelsea reminiscing about the pre-Abramovich days with a season slumming it with the rest of us. Both Arsenal and Spurs are there or there abouts too, but no other “Top” side seems particularly fussed about wrestling the 1st place away from Leicester. Even the relative lack of transfer activity in Jan seems to indicate a passive acceptance of the current state of affairs.
I would love to see Leicester kick on and lift the PL trophy. Is this a one-off or an indication of a levelling of the playing field perhaps? Is the gap between a $50m player and a $5m player narrowing, or is the sum of those players as a team more important than a few star names? Either way, it gives supporters of teams outside of the traditional top 3 or 4 a renewed hope that maybe their team is capable of doing something similar.
