Not offside if it’s ‘deflected’ by a defender? So a defender has to deliberately pass the ball to an opponent to play them onside? What the ****?

Clearly I don’t understand the rule, or at least Glenn Hoddle’s explanation of it.

I thought it had to be 2 defending players goalside, 1 of whom can be the goalkeeper.... only 1 goalside when ball played.... Saying on rte that the ball was played forward by RM before being touched by Liverpool players so benzema was offside.... they think it was wrong decision...

Yes, didn't quite understand that. Mind you, Hoddle tends to chat **** most of the time.
Looked like Fabinho played the ball to Benzema, meaning he was onside. Lucky escape, although Liverpool could easily be out of sight.

Typical of RM this season in this competition.
I make them favourites now.
I hadn’t quite realised how ancient the RM team is. Benzema is having a great year, but he’s 34, and Kroos, Modric etc are no spring chickens. Liverpool look a bit knackered. Could slow down considerably. Carlo will let his players decide how to approach it.

The guest ref confirms my interpretation above, which means the rule is just plain cretinous, he actually said that the defender has to deliberately play it the the opponent. Nuts.

Surely Benzema is offside when the RM attacker plays the ball forward? What happens afterwards is irrelevant.

Correct decision for me.

Yeah, that rule is a joke, but I suppose it means VAR got it 'right'.
Liverpool will get knackered after the season they've had.
Salah non existent.
I fancy RM to freshen things up from the bench and steal it.

Might be the case but that would have been a quick VAR decision, I suspect they were looking at the mystery what the **** is a deflection incident.

Anyway, done now.

Scrappy start to this half.

Looks a bit more open.
Madrid seem really reluctant to commit any men forward beyond Benzema and Vinicius Jr. It’s almost as if they have to go behind before they go for it. Shame, because I think they could make Liverpool really suffer if they pushed on a bit.

RM go 1 up. Jammy pass from a shot. Close to offside.
Can't see Liverpool getting back into this, after having been much the better side.
