So did I zog. My two daughters live near there and attend the occasional match. They have come up from non-league to the brink of the Championship. Immpressive.
Great win for Morecambe today, although apparently undeserved over the game itself (but deserved over the season - they were clearly fourth best in the league). Perhaps the smallest club in the whole of the FL, so quite an achievement.
There must be something in that Lancashire coast air! Blackpool promoted to the Championship, Fleetwood Town solid in League One, and Morecambe now joining them from League Two. On top of that, Barrow AFC survived their first season back in the EFL and AFC Fylde were headed for promotion back to the National League when the NL North 2020-21 season was voided due to Covid.
On as sub in the 62nd minute and part of a 1-0 win with a clean sheet. Not bad as a debut. Krul in goal for the Netherlands in their 2-2 draw with Scotland. Hanley didn't play as he's being saved for the qualifiers.
Godfrey nearly managed to score an own goal after being on the pitch less than 5 mins, but otherwise seemed to settle into the game. Hanley missed out as he was classed to have been "close but not too close" to John Fleck who recently provided a positive COVID test result. Today reported that Fleck has now received the all clear.
It would be surprising if an 18 year old would go into the national squad a few weeks after joining the national squad. He got his break with Gibson's injury and responded to that. Ireland's manager, Kenny, is very excited about his potential and we will benefit from that as well.
Giannoulis played the whole of Greece's draw with Belgium last night at LM. Tsimikas, who Liverpool signed in preference to Jamal Lewis, started at LB.
And Tsimikas was subbed after 60 minutes. As it was a friendly match with nothing at stake, I suspect both teams were looking to get game time for as many players as possible. Giannoulis and Tsimikas tend to rotate in the LB position, but it does raise the question whether we might ever play Giannoulis at LM. Again, I suspect not unless we have a stronger back-up at LB.
Just realised that we don’t have a mens GB football team at the Olympics again. Only time was 2012 in London since 1960s. Apparently the 4 home nation’s FA’s can’t agree the basis for a team. Grown men/women behaving like children. Surely an Olympics is important enough to agree to send a side? There is a GB women’s team who won 2-0 today against Chile. Could have been more. Gone are the days of the slow build up and lots of back passes.
Isn't the problem that FIFA and UEFA have a long-standing aim to have only a single unified UK team entered in FIFA and UEFA competitions? The 4 home nations are afraid that to enter a unified UK team in the Olympics would set a precedent that the governing bodies could seize on.
