linden have you seen the film "The Damned United" ? If so what did you make of it? I thought it was bloody marvellous.

But isn't Richard making his protest because the new rules and the bans imposed are unrealistic and unfair? If so then I don't see how the fact that he knew the rules holds water.

To me he is protesting to try and get the BHA to allow him to ride in the Breeders Cup. He is using this for his own motives.

He didn't hand his license in though did he? (or even threaten anything like that) He said that he thought he was hard done to, but not because of the rules rather because he was trying to correct the horse and thats why he went over the allotted number.

I do think the seeds were already sown on Mondy though Nass, and this further, longer ban tonight has pushed him over the edge. I find it a bit fanciful that he would put his career on the line for 1 ride in the breeders cup.

I don't think the bans do much harm to the big jockeys like Richard Hughes who win huge amounts of prize money. It's an obvious point but when you have the less well known ones who struggle to get 5 rides a week and are then banned for something innocuous how are they supposed to earn a living?

Michael Owen is giving his say on Twitter tonight and is not holding back.

He (and Paddy Brennan) have called John McCririck a clown.

"I would invite you and the Sky cameras to my yard to see them training and then to my home to see retired horses, just to show you how well they are looked after. Whips are made of foam. It is ridiculous to claim horses are getting hit or hurt. People need to listen to people in the know and stop bowing to outside pressure"

I hate turning the whip debate into a betting discussion. I think that should be the third thing that is considered after horse welfare and jockey welfare however, is it now possible to bet in a race if the ground description has the word soft in it? Isn't it highly likely that the 7 or 8 smacks will be used up before they even get to the last jump/furlong?

not to dismiss the serious of thedebate,,,,, but
