Morning boys and girls

I don't post a great deal but i have a look most days to see what the general crack is and catch up on the football gossip and opinion. But as they say the spectator see's more of the game, i thought i'd throw in my 2 pence worth.

The OT threads are what make this site what it is, there is only so much you can say about any footballing subject before a stalemate is reached between two opposing opinions and the tread descends into an insult laden slanging match.
The OT threads give an opportunity to have a wider variety of discussions with much more variety of input. Obviously as they are not the main topic i.e football, it will lead to less people using a particular thread as we all have an interest in football but only a few will have more than a passing interest in snails for example. The popular OT threads often have more replies and have more legs than the football related threads. Their is only so much that can be said about studge being injured, while the goings on in the cheese could keep Jeremy Kyle going for 10 series.
I personally liked the Gaza thread, it was interesting and could be quite thought provoking. If i wanted safe and mundane i would join facebook and read about what people had for their dinner instead.

My 2 pence

feel free to disagree and call me a ****.

cheers

Well said <applause>

Some have suggested earlier that if people did not like having OT threads like the political ones (Gaza being one example) then they should simply ignore the thread.

Can I therefore humbly make a suggestion?

Why not create a sticky labelled: "OT - Political Issues" and people can post to their hearts desire in there? And fellow posters who are that way inclined can go there and discuss at their leisure.

Those of us who come here to discuss footie and take a break from the other stuff would be happy to ignore the thread and not see what's being discussed. Just like I ignore the music thread.

That way every side wins.

Just a suggestion.

Corrected

No actually, good post FOOL, maybe see yous around a bit more.

I may try to get involved abit more mate, i refuse to get involved with the slanging matches to be honest which is often what any decent debate on here often descends into. I really do like this forum, much better than others out there, but there is an unfortunate trend toward any thread being derailed by usually 1 of 3 posters who have a expletive filled rant followed by 2 pages of them being called names by every other poster.

Hmmmm, something about that sounds familiar <laugh>

It would be a pity and a cruel irony if so much spirited input led to ****all actual change. I see mito is trying to distil some actionable points, but nothing decided or even proposed yet. Any proposals, mod mito? I know that the greasy one is too pallid for change.

Militants should be dealt with quickly and severely.

Only just back on the forum and found this thread. I've only read the first few and last few pages. I agree with what FOOL said above and I think we need OT stuff to keep the board ticking over.

I had a read of the Gaza thread on a couple of occasions and had no problem with it - I didn't post on it and don't usually post on any of the political ones because they don't interest me much, but for those who like that kind of stuff, as long as it's within site rules shouldn't it be allowed to stay!

Is Al Pacino available to be a mod. He'd keep **** in line.

What about my suggestion of having one specific thread and Sticky: OT - Political Issues for all such discussions and posts to be located ??

You sir are not any old fool , you are THE FOOL <ok>

Another thought:

We have one SINGLE thread to discuss all issues affecting other clubs (their matches, transfers, squads etc etc) which can be numerous and frequent namely: Rival Watch.

I cannot see why politics should have their own individual threads...

Thing is there are quite a few OT threads at certain times so do we sticky them all,and give Politics its own sticky?

If all OT threads were on the same sticky it could get messy, but we can't really sticky every OT thread individually cos' of space

I'm not sure their are enough political threads to justify a sticky or even a sub-category on the boards. Every know and then something occurs a thread is created people talk about it for a couple of days then it sinks. The gaza thread is the obvious exception but this was kept going more by sisu (who i personally like to listen to) because he was obviously passionate about the subject.

If we decided to categorize everything there would only be 3 - football, politics and random s**te.

The 3rd category would probably be 20 times bigger than the other 2 combined.

I would have to disagree as the minority threads do no harm really and are enjoyed by those using them

You could however instead of the rabid abuse of a cricket thread use the idea to create an other sports thread and yes there are boards for them but f me there's a reason you stick with your own.... Avoid Hamilton fanboys for example.

I really don't see the broken item that needs fixing. The politics could be discussed in the pub thread where all such bolloxology can be spouted but of course they whole point is to draw attention to x or y.

You could combine games/tv/movies as one thread for example

Or it could be the case that if people respect each other and maintain the ot in the title for example then what's really the problem. Is the very sight of the cheese or cricket thread so offensive as to cause an issue

I even forgot our season progress stat feat on the football side

Everyone remember the science/religion thread?

Went on for quite a while, was a mixture of tolerant and sometimes intolerant debate, got heated, even between posters that normally got on. Where is it? Gone. Because it ran its course, got very repetitious and so if memory serves the call was taken to close it. The fact a similar thread did not spring up soon after means the call was probably the right one and all that had needed to be said had been.

The only difference with the Gaza thread was the main poster wasn't on it to debate or argue the subject matter. They were there to use it as an on going propaganda tool. I personally took the opinion that once it was clear that poster was not there to engage with others, at least unless they accepted everything he posted without question then it was pointless going on to it. Haven't been on since. Due to the fanaticism of the poster in question and their, shall we call it stamina? the thread was never going to die.

I personally go with the "dont like, dont enter thread" approach unless the thread or posts breach forum rules. But I can understand a clean up exercise based on judgement. Do we want potential new posters witnessing an ever present thread spouting one political viewpoint simply because that poster has more maniacal stamina akin more to spamming that has resulted in everyone else giving up posting? Apologies if I'm wrong and genuine debate and conversation was still going on or was it as I suggest down now to one member posting his voluminous cut and paste with the odd person agreeing with the less nuttier stuff occasionally? It's a fine line censorship (although it, wasn't like the religion thread, actually closed) again I'd go with the argument that if a subject is wanted bad enough, replacement threads will spring up. By all means if they are all continuously closed then we can question mod censorship.

OT stuff is the filler, it also allows "online personalities" to develop. I believe I know posters better from their OT views on various subjects than purely on the LFC stuff where disagreement between us is usually limited to views of players etc

As for LFC only thread, that was traditionally the pub thread that at times of mass wumming on the board in general it became a sanctuary due to heavier modding. Even now bickering isn't really tolerated in it. I think that's enough rather than being totally exclusive.

And sorry to all those complaining about content be it OT or LFC. 1) if you want something else, create a thread but........2) be prepared to accept the other posters don't find you half as interesting/ witty etc as you think you are....if a thread dies its maybe not because everyone else is a moron......

I don't create many threads of either type, I try to participate in most if not all to varying degrees and I enjoy ranting with Dave or butting heads with Tobes as much as reading the knowledgeable detail in LFC posts from MITO or Daniallo or having banter with DR or Page......and all the others I haven't named.

It's a balance that I think the mods (not just the current ones but those since I joined) have largely got right. Very few people have stomped off,and left due to their treatment on here and it usually follows a distinct pattern where the poster becomes increasingly belligerent, blames mods, blames every poster or cliques then just goes mental and runs away lol.....can anyone name a poster that has left because they've been treated unfairly or unjustly despite perfectly reasonable behaviour? I can't.
