Facebook (and Twitter) get a bad press because the addicted, post about anything types are used as an example all the time but they are actually few and far between. Most people using it in what would be considered an normal way. Much like a hell of a lot of people see chat forums (effectively what Not606 is) as a sad way of life and only geeky losers would use such a thing. Is that true?

My lads and their partners, my sister, nieces etc. are all on FB, no problems. They share photos, stories, jokes whatever. There are settings aren't there for privacy so not everyone sees everything?

Chat forums fill different needs for different people. Some, like Jimmy for example, just want to talk about the footie and nothing else. Others want to talk about footie and will talk a bit of OT stuff, others are all over everything morning, noon and night. That's just 3 different groupings without really analysing. And RHC who makes up an entire group on his own [don't tell him I said that - he can't see this can he]

I mean his lack of quality clothes and his continuous wearing of the same clothes, the mess he leaves in his bedroom on view to anyone and everyone who views his videos.
He needs protecting against doing things that will come back and bite him on the arse.
I once on this site saw he had posted his email address and quickly pm'd him to tell that was a mistake and to delete it, he thanked me which is fair enough but he jumps in feet first without thinking of any consequences.
I see your point about him having a right to have the choice but the lads choices on social media sites seem to be the wrong ones mainly due to his condition.

I've seen him get ripped to bits on twitter because of the things I mentioned in my last post Tobes, I don't know whether praise for his inner strength to overcome it is in order or to look at it as a sad sign of his condition.

Oh and recently there's been a spate of posts showing babies on life support machines with a caption along the lines of "if you ignore this you want them to die". Thanks for that!

Yeah I have seen those too.
They are pathetic.
I even saw one with a kid holding a sign saying that if he got a million likes then the doctors would do this operation that would save his life?!
So if he didn't get a million likes the doctors would refuse and let him die?!
What ****ing doctor did he go to? Nick Riviera? I would be straight on to the police and get him struck off! lol

I realise that it is all a lie and there is no doctor etc, its just the ****ing ******edness of the whole scenario and people actually fall for it.

My mrs' (nm) sister does similar to that (not Downs) and it really annoyed me at first, just learnt to ignore it now.

I think most of it comes down to individual personality and acceptance. I am a really laid back person and very little bothers me, I find it easy to ignore and move on.

I have no doubt that both platforms do have some positive uses, but for me - the negatives outweigh the positives. I don't want any aspect of my real life (i.e. identified by name) being broadcast over the net. I'm actually internet invisible through choice, as I don't want people being able to look up my personal life on the net without my knowledge or permission.

Initially, it was to talk football. That's all I did at first which got me the "opinionated" tag for a while

Things change though. Got used to using the site and got to know other users so I got more involved in the off topic stuff. I then got roped in to being a mod too; my actual words were "I'll do it if no one else will"

Passes the time more than anything now; at work and whilst watching the boys. Occasionally log on whilst sat waiting somewhere such as in the mrs' (nm) work car park or in a waiting room etc. Because I use the app, it only takes a second to access the site.
